Diesel...Hows it work?

A few friends and myself were discussing just how awesome our trucks were. Someone posed the questions about how a diesel works. I know in part that through compression and heat the fuel is ignited. But how does the process stop when you turn off the key. There is no ignition system to shut down like in a gasser.

So how does that work?

Simple, when you turn off the key it closes the fuel solenoid. No fuel, no run. There is a condition called "Runaway" that can happen if you get an oil leak in your turbo where you can't shut off the engine because it's burning the oil from the leak. The only way to stop it is to shut off the air, either by covering the intake or spraying into the intake with a Co2 extinguisher.

Runaways can also be caused if there is a gas leak somewhere, like a propane tank leaking. We had a bulldozer blow itself apart when it ingested propane and ran away. Real scary since the ONLY way to stop it is Co2 or to remove the source of fuel. But as mentioned, the only way you can shut your truck off is to kill the fuel supply. Gas engines have throttle bodies where you could close off the air supply and it will shutdown. With diesels, its not an option.

backwards

there's a story in my town of a guy driving an old Maxim Fire truck.

Cummins 903 and a 5-spd. tried to start on an uphill and it rolled back... you guessed it... started the motor backwards. had smoke

comin' out the intake. musta been a sight

We had an old Timberjack Skidder with a Cummins that would run backwards if you tried to push over a tree, it would stall, then the tree would push it backwards. It was a pitiful sight. you couldn't see the machine it would smoke so badly.
