Diesel in oil barrels?

I am thinking about filling up a couple of empty barrels with diesel to try to outlast this up coming increase in fuel prices. One barrel had 15w40 oil in it and the other had tractor hydraulic oil in it. I will drain all the oil out that I can but you can't get all the oil out of a barrel. Will the remaining oil from either of these barrels cause me any problems? Thanks in advance.

I would think you would be ok as long as you drained all the oil out of the drums that you could. I just got 6 weeks worth of gas for my wife's car today.

I pour used motor oil into my truck by the gallon... and you are worried about a few drops??? No problem! The tiny bit of oil that will be left won't hurt or change a thing.

we didn't even flush the oil out of 30 gallon drums that we filled with gasoline for a snowmobile trip. No issue!

I would not pull into the gas station and try and fill a 55 gallon drum with fuel. I cannot say for sure in all, but I know in many states this is illegal. It depends on who is driving by or how much the gas station attendant cares on whether or not you will have a problem.

Well about a week ago I watched a guy pull into our local Costco station (which has the lowest price on gas in the Olypia -Tumwatwer area) with his pick up with two 55 gal. barrels in the back and hold up the whole line for a long time. Niether the attendant nor the other customers raised a fuss about this. Go figure.

55 gal Drums are legal containers for highway transport of petroleum products as long as they're properly secured... that's what their built for... they should be painted red though, to be safe.



just don't haul more than 2 drums without a HazMat endorsement

a gallon or 2 won't hurt your fuel in the barrels at all... if you don't go more than 5-10% oil mix in the diesel fuel, you will be fine [5% hydraulic, 10% lube oil]

I, too, got concerned over price and availability when Katrina hit LA & MS. I bought a 106 gallon transfer tank and stuck it in the back of my bed. Now, I can drive about 2,000 miles before I have to fill up..... or about 1700 miles with my 5'ver on the back. I think this is better, for me, cause I live in a flood zone in "hurricane land".



Everybody down here is really antsy right now... it sure feels good to have that full tank in case we have to run from a hurricane... . like we did 3 times last year.



Now, the only question is where to go? Dallas, Denver, or Salt Lake City. 'Cause I ain't staying around for another hurricane.

As far a filling the barrels, you can go to the fuel distributors in your area and they will usually fill them for you.



Of course this is a big farming area and they also have fleet fueling here where you get a card (similar to Pacific Pride) and they bill you each month. You can fill barrels there, also.



The oil you are talking about won't hurt anything. Think of it as a bonus.



One thing you do have to consider is what the drums are made of. You cannot store Diesel in galvanized containers or use galvanized pipe for diesel fuel lines. As the diesel sits in a galvanized container, it leaches the treatment metals and becomes corrosive to the fuel system. The fuel can be stored in regular steel or aluminum.

I take 5 30 gal. plastic drums to a local fuel distributor and fill them up. They are usually about 10 cents cheaper per gal. Besides the savings, I just like the convenience of being able to fill up at home. I have a forklift so it makes it easy to unload and move around the full drums.

The barrels that I have are the new plastic barrels so I am not worried about corrosion. Thanks for all the good replys!

During the oil shortage in the late 1970's I saw a real dumb___ fill 3 plastic garbage cans inside his van with gasoline! People were staring and pointing at him, the garbage cans were clearly visible through the open sliding door of the van, and he was quite calmly filling them up!! Don't know what happened to him, but I bet the gas ate through those garbage cans in about 2 days!!
