Auto Transmission HTO query?

A couple of weeks an old friend stopped by and during our visit I, of course, showed him my truck.
Turns out he is the Senior Manufactoring Engineer for Advanced Thermal Products, Inc. in Santa Ana, California. These folks can and do insulate just about everything that needs insulating and/or sound dampening, from factorys to trains, including diesel engines.
He was so interested in a possible market for our trucks the company went out and bought a 3500 and are doing a number on it as I write this. They are doing the complete exhaust system including the turbo, the hood, valve covers and if they have time, the firewall. Thay have made arrangements to be a vendor at the Dieselfest in Long Beach.
My friend offered to do a duplicate job on my truck to see how I liked it and so I could show it off at Dieselfest.

He feels it will make a dramatic change in under hood temperature and in cab noise. They allready do busses, tractors and the like and think the results will be just as impressive on our trucks.

What do you guys think? Is this a viable product? More important, should I go for it?

Thanks for any input,
Ron

Ron,
I am interested. Can you post a web site where I can get more info? What type of sound control do they perform for the exhaust?
thanks

Sounds like a really useful product. BTW, after having the LineX sprayed in, my cab is much quieter.

Fitz,
I really can't tell any more until I see them next week. Their web site is under construction. www.atpwrap.com
From the brochure my friend left with me they do real nice work. He did say for the prototype it all had to be hand stiched.
The promo for diesels says:
Reduce external surface temperature by as much as 1000 degrees... ... .
removable and reusable... ... .
engine kits protect electrical wiring, rubber hoses and belts and other engine components.
Sound reduction as much as 3dBs... ... .
Will keep you posted as I learn more,
Ron

Ron, although this sounds like a wonderful product idea, I can tell you that no arrangements have been made to display the product a Dieselfest.

I am interested in the product also. Is it a blanket of some sort that covers the engine ect. Saw "hand stiched"?

To all,
There is a very good article on noise reduction in the latest edition of the TDR, issue# 26. The article is written by none other than Robert Patton, himself. He even compares the noise levels to a Ford.

Very good information.

Doc,
I realize Scottyd is the main man.....
I can't contact my friend until Monday to find out what's up.
He seemed so sure, he was telling me they would be set up in the service bay or something... .....
Oh well,
Ron

I heard from my friend and he sent me some pictures. I would be glad to post them, but don't know how? I will be glad to e-mail them if interested... ... They look GREAT!
They feel they got the results they wanted.
Also I believe Scottyd was finally contacted.
Ron

Definitely interested in the sound dampening. Please capture my email and keep me posted. Thanks!

I think this is a wonderful idea #ad
!!dodge should look at this for an easy sound deadner to bring in the guys that would have bought diesels but hate the noise... ... ... ..... p. s. >>i love the sound of diesels!!!

No high tech fuel system needed. Just good old fashioned diesel power!!

Ron, I am interested in the outcome and have been looking for ways to reduce the in-cab noise. Please keep us advised by posting your findings to this forum.

E-mailed ATP with questions about their product. This is ATP`s response:

Bill,
Thanks for your inquiry regarding our Dodge-Cummins Turbo Diesel insulation system. Our company truck is a '99, 24 valve Dually, which has had our system for about 4 mos. In that time we have made numerous trips from Santa Ana to the San Francisco Bay area, Las Vegas, and Palm Springs. Because of this, we have been able to observe, "first hand", the results of our package. Believe me, it works! Both the Hood Blanket and the Valve Cover Blanket have a layer of acoustic insulation in addition to thermal insulation. Your cost is as follows;

Reflective Hood Blkt 129CU-5900 315. 00
Valve Cover Blkt 129CU-1201 150. 00
Turbo/Manifold Blkt 129CU-1202 195. 00
Outlet Elbow/Exh Blkt 129CU-1203 85. 00
TOTAL $ 745. 00

FOB: Santa Ana, CA
Delivery: 3-5 days ARO

Is your truck equipped with an exhaust brake?

Best regards,
Ron Moss
Sr. Manufacturing Engineer

It sounds like a nice package. #ad
. Would like to try it. At $745. 00 #ad

I am familliar with the marine sound/thermal deadeners. They have the added benefit of being waterproof. While shape-specific "covers" like a manifold/turbo blanket etc. . might be tough to do, a hood liner or firewall (a little tougher) and things like an exaust wrap would be easy (IMO).

In fact, when I first saw this post, I felt like someone kind of "stole my thunder", as I had planned to do the thermal/noise reduction set-up on my firewall, down pipe and hood liner and anything else I could manage.

Then I could pretend how smart and innovative I was! (don't know how to do smilies and stuff - yet)

I would prob. buy the shape-specific stuff though, it would likely be alot neater - you wouldn't have to splice so much.

There are several brands and thicknes's of marine thermal/acoustical blanketing on the market - you can pick them up at just about any marine outlet.

It is not cheap (per square ft. ), but MUCH more inexpensive than the prices I saw. Of course, these were all cut to fit already.
I am saying this stuff with NO ill will towards anyone - I do NOT want to challenge nor screw-up anyone's business idea, I just think we should all share our ideas and knowledge for the common good - all of us rammers. That's the point of the TDR; shared knowledge, right?

Anyway, the stuff is pretty easy to work with and is alluminized and uses self adhesive's and alluminized, heat/sound-proof tape to join splices. IMO, it would be relitively easy to do large area's with it - it worked VERY well on my boat and I see no reason why it would not work in this application (with the exception of "tricky" shapes.

I do not mean to affront the developer of this product, so I hope thet everyone understands that I am just relaying my own experiances for the potential benefit of another TDR member. I know that I certainly "lean" on the info. provided by other, more experienced rammers!

Anyway, just my $. 02 cents. (which is actually worth less than that - I live in Canada!) Geuss you better not take me too seriously then - can't even come-up with $. 02 cents!

Got 2 c it @ Diesel Fiest in Longbeach. If u want to start some wheres, do the valve cover - IMHO it did the most for the noise. They did a demo without and added each one individually (sort of) and JMO the valve cove "killed" most noise.

Thanks for that info , Ben. I was wondering which piece would quiet down the engine noise the most... ... I might be able to afford the rocker cover blanket #ad
