Have any readings been taken with a sound meter as to the level of sound attenuation within the cab? It might be of interest to many if readings could be taken as each blanket was installed. This would give the purchaser an idea of where to start and get the most silence for the buck. Most cannot lay out $750 in one shot. Like many, the wife rides "shotgun" and I know she would be most appreciate of a more peaceful environment. Course, wouldn't want to get the truck too quiet for others at traffic lights!

Millfly, Not sure about your question, but I`m sure they did. E-mail them. They will answer quickly.

They are currently making the kits for 24 Valve trucks ONLY. They will start making 12 Valve kits now that the guys are asking for them. I called and wanted to order just the valve cover blanket for my 12 Valve.
(for now... see Ben Stair`s post)

They asked me if I knew any TDR Members that lived near Santa Ana, California with a 12 Valve and would be willing to bring it to the shop. Their engineers can then take measurements & make patterns ect.

If anyone wants to volunteer E-mail or call http://www.atpwrap.com/

I am interested in the valvecover blanket also, if anyone gets a cost, pls email me.

HEMI DART,
You need to put the file on a webserver. It can't link to your PC (unless it's a webserver). #ad

If you have a free webserver with an ISP account, you can push files up there and then link to them. You don't have to make them part of a website or anything else, just remember the file name and what directory you put them in. That is how I do most of my enclosures on the TDR.

HemiDart,
When my truck comes in I will do some extensive testing with a sound meter from different positions on the truck. I would then like to experiment with different ways to reduce the sound level in the cab. The valve cover seems like a good start. I am interested in finding out just where the major noise is coming from and then attack the situation from there.
They ordered two trucks like mine at the same time and they were shipped the 28th of January. The other truck has been sitting on the lot for the last 10 days and they are still waiting for mine. I would love to take my sound meter out there and measure the decibles as they unload my truck - sorry, just a fantasy #ad

You might have better luck hocking this insulation stuff to Powerjoke owners. Their engines already sound pretty weak, so they'd probably want to hide their embarrassment. Personally, I'd buy megaphones and cut vent holes in my fenders to broadcast that beautiful Cummins sound to the world! If it attenuates the wife's voice in the cab, so much the better! God loves Cummins diesel music and so do Ram owners! Rejoice in the sound of POWER! As for the bedwetters who would have bought one except they didn't like the sound, they aren't worthy to wash a Ram, much less own one! ~Bat~

Bat,
Truck arrived and YE GADS IT IS LOUD!!!! Love the sound of power, but I have worked in a noisy environment for 36 years and my ears have become a bit sensitive as a result. I kind of look at this as a challenge, just as many (like myself when my warranty runs out) will challenge the engine for power. In the meantime my first priority is to attack the sound then gauges. The next good day that I have available I plan to use a top quality sound meter and record the decible readings from different positions around the engine compartment as well as the cab. Then the experimentation begins. Wife hates the sound of diesels! Don't really mind exchanging a few decibles for a little lovin from the wife. Be back to all after the next nice day.

Truck just went in for some custom side paint and should be out of the shop in about 10 days. Truck is a 2001 auto 3500. Will do some extensive testing with a sound meter. Anybody like to request a reading from a particular point on the truck. (Please don't ask me to hang under it while taking a reading #ad
)
E-mailed Timothy Tompson of Advanced Thermal Products and he said although he could not give the decibel reduction of individulal items, the complete package gave a reduction of 24-26 decibles. That is quite a lot!!!!!
I have been investigating the price of marine sound deadening products as well as Ziebart and have found them to be quite expensive. One piece of 1 inch X 32" X 54" was $109. Thermal products valve cover and hood blanket might just be a reasonable answer. (Especially since the wife is saying "This is too big and too loud - I don't like it #ad
)

Just talked to Ed Thompson of Advanced Thermal products and ordered the complete kit mentioned above. However, there is an error in the $745 price as one piece of the kit was not listed - an exhaust pipe cover that goes from the manifold to the catalytic converter. The complete cost of the package is about $850. Will get back to you with complete decible readings as I place each piece on the engine.

Millfly,
Could you check the dB reduction with your source? If I remember correctly a reduction of 3dB is halving the sound power - 24-26 dB seems like it might be a misprint. We have a hard enough time achieving the 3dB reduction on the products I work on.

Brian

Millfly, Let us know how you like the kit. Quality, Fit & Finish , noise reduction ect.

You Can be our official tester ( if you want to) #ad

Did Thermo tech send you the pictures in their brochure Via E mail. ? If not I will send them. ( Good pics)

How do you like the truck so far?

Did the decibel level of your wife`s voice increase when she found out how much the kit was?..... lol #ad

Brian,
Be happy to run a complete sound test on the truck with a professional quality Simpson Sound Meter. Will calibrate at each recording session. Decible reductions in the 20's area seem impossible to me - we will see and I will share the info. Personally, I would be happy to achieve reductions in the 3 to 5 range, especially if it took that valve sound away. Love quiet power!

HemiDart,
Be happy to describe fit, finish, and installation of the complete thermal set. Will also give you decibel reduction. If this makes me an official tester - call me offical #ad

Advanced Thermal Produdcts did not send pictures, would appreciate any you have. Kit should arrive in the mail sometime in the next week.
Just got the truck out of the paint shop which transformed it from a green work truck to a sport truck. Wife liked that and believe it or not, gave me a 90 decibel smile when I told her I was getting rid of some of the noise. Now she can only complain that the truck is just too big #ad
#ad

I do like the truck - it is just a bit hard to adjust from the 300E Mercedes I was driving to this. (Wife inherited the Benze)It is like from one side of the spectrum to the other. Wife is definitely afraid of the truck but is finding things she likes such as the heated seats and visor mirrors with lights that dim. Women are just different creatures!
In talking to Ed Thompson of Thermal Products, he mentioned the Dodge Diesel they put the system on actually ran cooler under the thermal blankets than previously. Claimed the temperature gauge no longer cycled between 190 and 210 but stayed under 200. This was because the blankets were forcing heat out the tailpipe rather than radiating it out into the engine compartment. Might do a before and after exhaust gas temperature reading.
I find the seats are really comfortable. I have had two back operations and within 20 minutes can tell a bad seat from a good one. Truck is excellent from this aspect.
I will get back to you with more info.

Hey Guys,
I have been reluctant to post on this thread, even though I'm the one who started it... ... . Sometimes it takes awhile to evaluate things. I am not one to jump in and rave about something I don't understand.....

Yes, ATP gave me a total insulation job some months ago at their shop in California.
My wife and I were very impressed with the product, especially when stuck on a construction freeway in Southern California. We immediately noticed that we could survive with the windows down, and the diesel not rattling in our ears off a concrete wall!
OK, After getting home, We weren't as impressed. Actually, We never thought it was that loud to begin with, but then again, we are new to diesels and live in the country. We usually cruise at 70+ on the Interstate with the windows closed and the stereo blasting.
Since that time I have removed the Valve cover (Porky's got it for evaluation!) and the turbo cover (to install EGT gauge). The difference is amazing! This diesel sounds like a diesel! Just to make things worse, I ran a straight thru exhaust! Not for the non BOMBers!
I really wish some independant folks would run some db test on this product as I think all would be amazed!
Also, I would like to comment on the quality of this product! Yes, it is a bit pricey, but, it is HI TECH! It looks like a thin bullet proof vest, hand stiched to fit a Cummins! The workmanship is unbealivable. I actually got to watch the guys making it! I also watched them make insulation for huge power plants! This is not a make or break thing for ATP. They have been doing this stuff world wide for years. ****, the only reason they are into our trucks is 'cause the president of ATP got a Dodge Diesels! I think folks who want a quiet "puller" will not go wrong in checking out this product.
Give them a call if you want to tone it down. By the way, there is also a bunch of benefits to keeping the heat where it belongs, under wraps. I wish I was a scientist so I could understand this part! Hey, JD! You out there? Contact ATP for an explanation.
ronmoss@atpwrap.com
Maybe this is not for the type who pulls the turbo silencer ring and runs a straight thru exhaust... ... . But those looking for the ultimate puller and/or cruiser or want to make mama happy with a diesel... ... Give 'em a call!
Thanks,
Ron

Bye the way,
Porky's buddy (?) raves about his kit from ATP... ... ... ... Now Porky can show him he has a valve cover from ATP along with the DD stage III's he picked up some time ago in Lost Wages... ... ... .
Porky, see you in Minden in May if your auto still works!!!! He he... .

Could I get some feedback on ATP's hood blanket? I was thinking about adding Dynomat's Hoodliner although this may be a better sound suppresent. Any comments? Also, could you describe the installation (is the OE hood liner removed. . is it clipped in or installed with spray adhesive etc. )?

John,
I have not received my set of insulation mateials yet, but you do have to remove the original hood blanket (fiber board?) by cutting off the original plastic clips. These clips are a real shocker to purchase as it requires 15 new clips at $3 each. The Dodge parts salesman took pity on me when he looked at the parts and sold them to me for $2 each. This is really pathetic even at $2 when you look at the clips. I quickly looked at the way the OEM blanket was attached and I do not believe you can save the old clips. I will just clip them off with a pair of diagonal pliers. Found out you can save the clips by pulling on the clip and wedging the insert to the side with a screwdriver. I only had to replace two clips this way. Valve cover and hood blanket are now installed. I will get back later with decibel reduction levels.

Millfly, I figured you would have to remove the OE hood liner. I have a forked door panel puller that works very well for the removal of these types of clips. Reusing the clips is almost impossible though. An excellent alternative to the OE clips is to purchase the large diameter style plastic clips utilized by GM (among others) sold through GM or an auto body paint store. The advantage to this is 360 degrees of clamping force applied to the hood liner. I would use the OE style plastic clips along the front edge of the hood liner, as the holes are really close to the edge (of the OE hood liner) at that point however, maybe not on the ATP hood liner.

I know what you mean by Dodge parts pricing... I purchased a small quantity of the little plasic rivets that are used for inner fenderwell attachment (prior to purchasing my Snap-On plastic rivet gun kit), for the bargain price of: #ad
$2. 00 each! Ouch! #ad

Does anyone know how thick the ATP hood liner is?

Hey guys,
The complete insulation set arrived yesterday and I will get on the engine this week with a sound meter and begin assembling the system piece-by-piece and let you know the characteristics of the set. I'll even crawl under the truck and test the sump with the meter. #ad
