Here in the north Seattle area, the price this moring at my local Shell station was $2. 48/gal. But, yesterday I was about 35 or 40 miles north and I saw diesel for anywhere from as low as $2. 18 to $2. 25, and noe higher. I think were still getting gouged down here. There is no reason that they can sell it that muc cheaper that close to here. If anything, it should be higher.

Funny thing (not really) about that pipeline break is that the pipeline goes through Tucson before it get's to Phoenix, and as you mentioned, the break was between Tucson and Phoenix. That being the case, Tucson should have had a glut of fuel in our system, but our prices when way up too, but not as much as Phoenix. I suspect that one of the reasons (other than gouging) is that all the tanker trucks that would usually deliver fuel locally in Tucson were running it up to Pheonix instead, thereby causing an artifical shortage in Tucson.

How can buying another vehicle be cheaper? You can buy a bunch of diesel for what you will pay on a new car payment, insurance, fuel, oil, maint, etc. , not to mention you will still be paying the insurance on your truck while it is parked. Not unless you pick up one of those $500 POS. I have thought about this as well. My thought is if you NEED a fullsize truck, then have one and pay to feed it. The little bit of cost you will save in just fuel does not offset the cost of owing and operating another vehicle, even if it gets twice the mileage.

With the higher fuel prices I finally decided to get an econo car to commute with and the way I figure it I am break even or better. I agree that you couldn't come out ahead with a new car, but you certainly don't have to settle for a $500 POS either. My scenario may not be typical, as I drive >70 miles a day commuting to work, but it doesn't take much to see the cost/benefit. I found a 99' Corolla with 75k miles for $6k. With the way these cars last I should be able to double those miles with normal maintenance. Payed cash, but if I use the rates available to me at the time an average pymt would work out to appx $113/mo. At 1500 miles a month, I have saved appx $110/mo in gas (37mpg Oo. vs 17 mpg @ $2. 299/gl) Now factor tires and oil changes for the Corolla cost about 1/3 of the cost on the truck, and I am ahead. Insurance on the truck went down almost as much as liability insurance cost on the car, so minimal cost there. Even better is the 7,500 miles (driving car 5 mos now) of warranty I still have on the truck. Now I just save the truck for weekend trips pulling the toys and vacations pulling the RV, which will still eat up 2-3k miles a month this summer. So the truck still gets in it's workouts and is happy!

I paid $1. 97 at the Cowboys west of Canton, I think its Cartesville. Its running $1. 99 this week, $1. 88 for regular gas at the QT. The station was very busy. In Alpharetta the gas is in the $1. 80s and the Diesel is higher at $2. 15, a lot depends on where you buy. I save . 20 just going to a truck stop over the "city" stations. One shell sells diesel for $2. 28 when you can go up the road for the $2. 15 station on the same day.



Last fill cost $118, but thats better than the usual $140 bucks for 60 gallons.

Highway tax, not state sales tax that makes Diesel high priced... . 20 or 30 years ago, Diesel was much cheaper to buy at the pumps than gas, until some beurocrats decided to slap a much higher highway tax on diesel than on gas. They figured big rigs tore up the roads more than passenger cars, so they taxed diesel higher.

Looks like you are going to the wrong stations. Try Rinaldi and Balboa in Granada Hills. If that fails, Union 76 on Glenoaks at Sunland Blvd.
