What Happens When Things Go Bad... Pics..

rscurtis and Mike are dead on with BG a runner up. Good job! Not many people know this. Not because they are not good mechanics, but because they just have never been exposed to it. It is a strange phenomena the way the aux. case changes torque but it does. And yes, none in direct as it just becomes a large carrier bearing.

I'm about to explode on this one. The cab is on the wrong end.

And that is a big 'ol muffler/dpf/cat/major heat source for a cab over.

OK, I'll tell you rather than waiting 'till morning. .

DD15 in a Sterling conventional.

Head gasket was drooling coolant to the outside.

So far, these have been pretty trouble free engines. Not bad for a recent design.

The exhaust brake / turbo thingy at the end of the engine is the drive unit from the turbo to the flywheel. Takes the extra energy from the turbo leaving as excess heat, runs it through a turbine which applies it to the flywheel via a small geartrain.

Claim it will really boot 'em in the arse for picking up speed on a freeway ramp. Called turbo compounding.

A link to a short blurb on it here.

Ah ha! The way the last pic looked to me on my phone was the cab was at an angle ( like it was jacked up)

Man I need a PC.

Nope, designed by a different former enemy... ... ...

Boo hiss, bad clues.

I based my GUESS on this comment and then went looking for photo evidence, ain't that a Mitsubishi Fuso BOX in the background of a pic! didn't Mitsub build engines for Zero's and stuff?

I guess you guys can tell, I'm not a HD big rig expert, I used to be good at telling what the truck was while it was coming at me down the hwy.

I think we'll see more OK Guys, what is that pic's showing up real soon. Interesting.

Sorry about the crappy clue, I was referring to the Germans...

The box in the background is something I will use in the future to put you guys off track... ... ... ... :)

Work on anything that shows up in the driveway so I can come up with plenty of mystery motors.

I'll keep finding them if you guys want me to keep doing it. .

Mike. :)

I was out of the running on this, as I've never seen a DD15.

Turbo compounding was used years ago on reciprocating aircraft engines. Some engines of that era approached the BSFC of a modern diesel engine.

There are some old Cat PEEC 3412 engines that used compound-parallel turbocharging... what a nighmare to troubleshoot!!. .

It was a mechanical 3412 with an electronic stepper motor controlling the fuel rack, had compound turbos on the left, another set on the right, then they paralleled into a common aftercooler housing...

The things were a beast though. .

Yup, DD15 is too new for this old codger... ... . If I bring you a two cylinder, two stroke, 1/2 hp. Maytag washing machine engine, will you work on it?:-laf

Yes, keep up the picture quiz!

This site is slowly dieing and needs some gitty-up-go... . 40,000 members and only about 120 active at any one time:confused:

I like the picture quizzes too! I had the 6v-71 nailed. All I ran out of high school were 6v-71 in a Trojan loader, a 6v-53 in another trojan and in a truck, few 4-71's and a 3 -71 in dozers and backhoes. I also had an HD-5 A-C dozer with a 2-71 in it. It's a wonder I can hear myself fart after running those things. :-laf

My first trip as a big rig driver was in a 79 IH cabover (aka Cornbinder) with an 8v-71, painted red as it had been rebuilt. AT the first fuel stop, we decided to check the oil. No oil on the stick. Added 1 gallon to put it on the stick then added another to make it top off. Made absolutely no difference in how the engine sounded or ran when it was all oiled up! That was a fun truck to drive (10 speed).

The RINGING IN MY EARS HAS JUST RETURNED I dont have the wrench experience as you guys but drive one of those NASTY SOB'S and you'll never forget what to look for before you get in. If it had a Detroit I got sick and went home
