I have a Polaris Diesel ATV and absolutely LOVE it. It is based on the Sportsman 500 model.
Advantages of diesel over gas are the same as in anything else: fuel efficient, low end torque, high-powered charging system, which is great for winch use (has two batteries in parallel), easy starting (no choke, can be equipped with grid heater start aid similar to Cummins), diesel fuel always on hand for me, so it is easy to refuel.
Only disadvantage is it is slower than the gasser (top speed 45 mph) and typical of any mechanical injected diesel, the engine is noisier, but the exhaust is actually quieter.
As for the Yanmar diesel engines, I have a Champion 30 gallon air compressor in my work truck. It is equipped with the 10 HP air-cooled Yanmar diesel. I got this compressor because I could run it from the truck's fuel tank and not have to carry around gas like many other compressors require. The Yanmar engine on this compressor sounds almost exactly like my Polaris ATV and I love it just as much!
Yanmar also offers liquid cooled engines and has a horsepower range slightly below and well above the 10 horse on this compressor.
Hatz is another company that offers air cooled diesels.
The diesel used in the Kawasaki Mule is a 3-cylinder liquid-cooled, very similar to the Kubota. Someone even recently told me it is simply a "rebadged" Kubota. I test drove a Mule diesel and loved it, but I prefer my Polaris ATV for versatility/recreation and work all in one.
