2nd diesel newbie Q?

Ok I'm still diesel dumb, but I have a question that I didn't want to  myself by asking on the normal boards.

Does the Cummins use Glow Plugs?

I've heard this arguement forever and I want to know for fact.

Thanks

Glow plugs?

First of all welcome aboard. The second generation of Dodge Cummins (94 thru present) do not have glow plugs. There is a heater grid on your intake manifold that pre-heats the air prior to starting. That is why they dont need glow plugs. Please feel free to jump in here illflem. (He knows alot more about these things than I do. ;)

David, you about said it all. The only thing I can add is that grid intake air heater starting aid systems seem to be more reliable but draw more juice than glow plugs. Glow plugs are a consumable item like spark plugs, they have to be replaced. I've never had to replace a grid heater element, just solenoids and wiring. If I'm not mistaken newer PSDs have switched over from glow plugs to intake heat.

Just for your general interest, glow plugs are typically found on indirect injection (pre-combustion chamber) engines. The B is a direct injection engine and thus some other type of starting aid is used. By the way, the B will easily start without cycling the grid heaters down to about -15*C. (Just a little more smoke!)
