Get this, I had an old dirt mover tell me he was mixing 50% diesel and 50% used engine oil and running it in his earth movers. He then said, he tried it in his dodge and it ran better than on diesel alone. Now I cant figure if this is good or bad. He said he would separate the water from oil,run it through 2 oil filters and mix it with diesel. This guy did say, about 10 years ago, diesel was brown and oily than now. today you can tell if you are looking at gas or diesel. I was just wondering if anybody has ever heard of this. :)

50% seems a bit on the strong side. I've done 15% used motor oil in the tank and it runs great. I think it does actually run better than straight diesel. I don't filter it. I use a clean container when I drain the oil and then straight into the tank. My 2 fuel filters will catch anything that might be there.

A lot of truck fleets will do this to get rid of the old oil because it costs them a lot to dispose of the oil. It is called hazardeous waste in the quantities they need to dispose of especially; as is ours also, but we can use Checkers free for ours. Not sure of the percentage mix they use though and have not heard of a lot of people doing it with our trucks. For myself I will not be mixing anytime in the future.

50% seems like a bit much. Running engine oil in any amounts will make a #2 diesel engine run better. There is a considerable amount more heat energy in the heavier engine oil than there is in #2 diesel.

More heat (in this case) = more power.

Every once in a while I will run about 15-20% spent engine oil with about 2oz. of acetone to break up the surface tension a little, runs great. Fuel filters do suffer though.

JK do a search and read posts in alternative fuels. Owners who have tried to run synthetic oil thru their engines report that it doesn,t burn it just runs out the exhaust pipe in a guey form.

oooo. I could probably do without that, enough messy black stuff comes out my tailpipe already. Anyone mix clean, unused, oil? I'd like to quiet my injection pump a little, and have a piece of mind about the lubrication of the pump too. Does adding more oil to the fuel make it smoke more? I saw a guy pour a quart of oil into the carb of an old chevy gasser once as a practial joke, and to make a long story short, I have NEVER seen a vehicle smoke that much... . :-laf

I ran a couple quarts of new through mine before, didn't smoke at all... does quiet things down.

If all you are after is lubrication then add 2 cycle oil to the fuel. 2 cycle is is designed to be burned in the engine and is clean and 99. 9 ash free.

200:1 seems to be a good ratio. I have run it 75:1, 100:1 150:1 and settled on 200:1. No extra smoke ever.

If I have used motor oil to get rid of, I let it settle for a few days then pump it through a 10 micron filter and mix at 100:1 in the fuel. The truck loves it. Did it for over 100,000 miles on my last 3/4 ton Cummins.

I have a 100 gallon aux tank on my '98 3500, whenever I have used oil around, I dump it in there. I have never noticed any thing different.

The EPA types that come around my shop say to call it "used oil" instead of "waste oil". I have a drum in my shop that was labeled waste oil. When they saw it, they told me to re-label it. They said used oil is not as nasty as waste oil...

I used to run about a half-gallon of used oil per tank of diesel in my '92 in the winter for the extra lube. I've done it a little bit in my 2000 truck without any problems, but I suspect it's probably better left to the older, strictly mechanical engines. For what it's worth, Cummins says up to 5% used oil in the fuel is perfectly fine.
