My Diesel Particulate Filter died at 17,000 miles... No regenerative warnings.. Just got the See Dealer warning and then the infamous 200 miles to 5mph countdown.. Never even new that my 2013 2500 had a soot catcher.... Thought I knew a lot about the def system until this... heading on a 3000 mile trip in a week and doing a lot of research on it.. is their anything i can do to prevent this happening again.

12,300 miles on my 2013 2500. Likely will hit 17,000 on our June vacation in a few months. Am concerned that my truck never gives regenerative info.

I hope that if there is a DPF issue, it comes after our 2700 mile trip to the smokies in June.

I agree

I'm leaving with my 5ver Next Thursday for a 3000 mile round trip to SanAntonio TX from Wisconsin...Talk about needing to Trust my Truck again.. But you can't drive Scared..My Dealer has said that this doesn't happen often..

27 K on my truck with no issue to date. 70/30 City/Hwy driving style. There was a recall (P35 I think?) in regards to regen not occuring correctly due to a mis-wiring issue. Otherwise, you should be ok. Maybe it's just a bad sensor and not the catalyst? Going for an occasional long drive and avoiding stop and go situations really helps the DPF passively regen ensuring lower buildup of deposits. Also, not hot-footing around from stop to stop slows the buildup of soot in the DPF as well.

If your dealer is saying the DPF is bad by itself I would get another dealer. The DPF is just along for the ride. Anything that happens to it is caused by something upstream. Just replacing the DPF without fixing the underlying problem is just a waste of Chrysler's money and your time. But then again the dealer gets 40% markup on a $2k part for changing it.

If you've done too much idle time and all short trips not allowing the truck to come up to Operating Temp you can over load the DPF and get the message that it's plugged up see the dealer. These new trucks need to be used. I'd take it out on the highway and let it run at highway speeds for at least 45 min if you can hook up your trailer and make it work it'll get into the Re-Gen cycle sooner. I have noticed that if I run reg Diesel the truck will go through a re-gen cycle roughly every other tank. When I run on BioDiesel it'll go two to three tanks between re-gen's. How can I tell when the truck is going through a re-gen cycle? I watch the fuel econ screen on normal highway driving on level ground it'll show 18-25 mpg when in re-gen it bar graph will show 15-18 mpg on the same road same conditions. You'll also smell how do I describe it a hot metal and slight rubber burning odor. THis past winter I had a few weeks that my truck didn't get out to stretch it's legs. Snow extra cold and my work schedule. The first chance I got to let it breath on a clear highway it was in re-gen for almost 50 min. Hope this info helps.

The dealership had it 3 times, they also replaced the def filter and pump before they replaced the DPF... The service advisor said that the mechanic was following a Flow chart..I normally put about 120 miles a day on it mostly at Highway speed.. but this Thursday were starting the Texas trip... The truck will get a good workout..

Dope! (Homer Simpson expression) I didn't know there is a DEF filter. Since Def just trickles, is changing that filter more like a 100,000 mile service interval?

Wrong. Starting with the 2013 (or maybe 2014) model year the pickups also received the DEF treatment.

Kevin

Please Re-read n7, it isn't "DEF", it's "DEF Filter" that the pickups don't have. Jacknife is correct, except for the statement of just DPF (They do indeed have the DEF treatment system).

That seems frequent. I can see a regen with Bully Dod as the DPF EGT sensor will spike about 400 degrees above the post turbo EGT sensor. I drive 70/30 highway. The truck does this at around 1000 mile intervals. The use of DEF allows less EGR so exhaust entering DPF @ higher temps on 2013 & later helps with soot load & regen frequency

Lots of guys on various forums are using the '13 & newer trucks in oil field applications with huge amounts of idle time and ZERO issues.
