RAM 50 TD??

Someone in my town has a turbo diesel RAM 50, the 1/4 ton trucks. Don't know but it must be a Mitsu as well.

I've had some wierd ones that are mentioned here. While working for a Lincoln-Merc dealer, the zone rep came in and had a inside deal on the BMW powered Mark VII's because they were flops. She was getting one. ONE Merc Lynx Diesel with the Mazda engine, at idle the whole cowl/dash did a dance! and you could sidestep the clutch in 1st. and not stall the engine. Later on, while working at a Gas station, the pump Boy did fill up a Nun in a Camry- Diesel powered! Luckily He noticed and we pushed the car in and popped the drainplug in the tank. We gave her 2 tanks free. I have a Chiltons book that shows a Chev S10 Diesel.

My father-in-law dropped off my project car last weekend. It's an '84 Volvo 740 GLE. It has a 6 cylinder turbo diesel with a Bosch VE injection pump. Not currently intercooled, but I think I can make a 700 series gasser intercooler work. Also looks like the injectors from the truck may fit in the head. Will probably take A LOT :D of bombing befor it needs that much fuel though. I get a parts car to go with it to boot. Looks like motor will need to be reringed before I do anything though. Any bombing sugestions while I'm in there?

Paul,

I played in the past with the volvos, basicly its a vw 1. 6 with 2 more cylinders. very frigile device, bombing it will couse piston seperation & rods stickin thru the block, not to mension the notorius head cracking in the chamber in between the valves

if you have a non cracked turbo head, it worth its weight in gold

now what those cars are realy good for is a small block chevy conversion, there is a company named JTR that makes a conversion kit,in case you live in a state that has no smog check for diesels like california

snow king,

trust me on that one... ... or find a car or a manual for yourself

I rebuilt 2 of them about 10 years ago ,most of the o/h parts came in vw boxes.

as i understand vw uses the same motor in the cargo vans in europe.

Thanks for the advise Uncle Joe. Only problem is that I wouldn't disgrace any vehicle with a small block chebbie. :D I'll probably end up putting this one together in pretty close to stock form other than some suspension updates that dad has the parts for already. Kind of nice having 7 parts cars to pull parts off of.

There's a couple of old Toyota diesel pickups and an Isuzu car running around our area. One of those pu's belongs to my ex son-in-law's brother... . 45+ mpg.

Yes, ALL Volvo engines are produced by VW. Not only the diesel but also the gas engines are VW.

Yes the same engine is also used in a VW delivery van,the "LT35".

The first diesel engines ( back in the early 80's) used in Jeeps where Renault. Later then and up to date the engines are VM's.

VM is an Italian company( not too far away from my home) which has been bought by the Detroit Diesel group.

BTW. The automotive part of Volvo has been bought last year by Ford. ( I think, not 100% sure)

In most of the world, diesels are available in just about everything. I'm a particular fan of the Toyota turbodiesel Landcruisers. I never cared for the Land Rover 2. 5 TDIs, but I hear the new TD5s are better. The current VM turbodiesel Grand Cherokees look nice as well. Too bad they're not available in the US.

I'm pretty sure the VMs and Renaults are not the first Jeep diesels. Wasn't there a Perkins option in some early CJs?

Currently own a '81 Chevy Luv with the 2. 2L Diesel. Have about 280k on it and get about 33 mpg. Did not know alot about Diesels till purchased this pu. With the service that this engine/vehicle has given me, with regular maintenance, it was a big reason for the puchase of the Dodge/Cummins. Course, towing was another factor.

Really like the Cummins!

Don't know the specifics but yes, the Perkins 4cyl was available in the Jeep CJ's in the mid to late 60's I believe. I think I heard the majority were sold to mining companies.

Wierd Diesel Powered trucks.

I worked for a large alternator/starter shop in No VA and they ran Isuzu P'up and Chevrolet Luv trucks with a 4 cyl 5 spd combo. They even had 2 S-10 trucks with same set up about 1985.

I saw a diesel Toyota 4WD PU when we were running in the mud back then too. I recall it was a 1984 purchased in CA.

Nothing bugs (no pun intended) me more than when I am filling at a truck stop, and have a new VW bettle turbo diesel pull up in the next pump... . just isn't right.

Here's one for ya.

I had a roommate in flight school that had a diesel VW Rabbit. It was a nasty shade of green.

He called it the "THUNDER PICKLE"!

There's a older gent here on the island that has a late 80's 1/2 ton Ram with an Isuzu and a 6 speed transmission fom a bus in it. It is a real clean installation.

At one time I saw a Ford Courier (Mazda) with a 4 cyl diesel, I would have liked to have it but the owner wouldn't part with it . Also saw a 78,79 Toyota with a little turbo diesel in it course it was at a salvage yard.
