Diesel Secret & high-fat WVO?

I made this fuel station to be self-contained so I can roll out to the truck to fill it and it only takes a corner of the garage

I don't have any oil yet ... . but soon... . I first pour the oil through this strainer, ...

#ad

You see the valve on the right, tapped in at 6" off the bottom, then goes through this smaller strainer... . cleanable...

#ad

Then to the 2 pumps dictated by DSE. in line... . I hooked both electric lines together at the end so there is one plug-in.....

#ad

Then on to the 2 household filters... . the first is a 5-15 micron filter, then on to a 1-5 micron carbon block filter... . But first you see the handle valves on the right side of the filters, this is a bypass valve I will use for mixing... . then open for filtering. .

#ad

The hose goes from the 2 filters to a bypass for the fuel filter... . I close the valve to the FF then open the hose that goes up to the side of the barrel for mixing in bypass..... After, I close that valve then open the one to the FF and it goes to the opening in the top where I poured the oil in to filter everything... ... .

here is the hand pump for pumping into the truck when I roll it out... . Has a 8' hose and a storage spot. Pumps 1 gallon for every 10 pumps of the handle. Has an adjustable pickup tube inside the barrel and I set it for 6" off the bottom so water and sed. can settle to the bottom.

#ad

You see the valve at the bottom of the barrel... this is to drain the water and crap every once in a while...

Eric -- That's just too frick'n cool.

Now the plumbing confuses me a little. Does the waste oil go into the tank through the metal strainer? If so, where does it go when you start the pumps? Does it go back into the barrel??? That can't be, can it? Also -- at what point do you blend your mix of oil, diesel, RUG, Diesel Kleen & DSE & how do you blend it?

Lastly -- How much do you charge to make me one down here if I pay for your plane ticket to sunny S. Florida???? :)

fuel maker

Eric,

That unit is way cool. I'm waiting for my book to be shipped out to me hopefully by this time next week.

The unit you built is that from a parts list in there book? If not do you have a parts list ? How much did the set up run you to build? I'm just waiting to build one have about 10 gal. of wvo standing by. Well hope you find some oil to test that sucker out.

Once again great job keep us posted :)

I pour in the oil, the gas and such in through the strainer... which is a bigger mesh to catch food particles... at the funnel to mix... . there is a tap with a valve at 6" off the bottom to go to the smaller strainer, then to the pumps to mix... . and yes it does go back into the barrel... . both when mixing... in bypass, and when filtering... ...

To bypass, I turn the valves on the WH filters to bypass and open the valve the valve that goes to the side of the barrel and close the one to the Fuel filter... . Turn the pumps on and it mixes via the pumps... .

Then reverse the valves and they go through all the filters for a bit... . after filtering, I will let it sit to separate any water, then pump it by the hand pump into the truck.

nice job, one thing you will find out those water filters need different rubber gaskets and you will not find them at the hardware store you need buna rubber and they can be found at any hyd repair shop also the filter cartridge will not last very long with 2 pumps try using only 1 pump it will take longer but the filters will last longer also the waterblock filter will work but it will plug very fast try it first if need be luberfinder filters has a great filter ffd2 spinon filter for around 6 or 7 bucks that works great same company make the base for filter they cost 12 bucks let the oil stand for a few days the less water in the oil the better off you will be.

good luck

Eric... ... wow... ... your serious about this aren't you. Nice job. Let us know how this stuff works. I'm still not sure what the DSE does though. Anyone been using these blends minus DSE?

Mike

Mike -- There are tons of people doing it at the http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/groupee/forums/a/frm/f/159605551 forum. Click that link and then click the Find button and then type in blending and you'll see tons of threads about blending. Most go with a 75% to 85% oil and then the difference made up with either Kerosene, Regular Unleaded Gasoline (RUG) or #2 Diesel. Then they throw in Diesel Kleen for good measure and then burn it. Basically what the DSE kit states except no DSE additive.....

"Anyone been using these blends minus DSE?"

I guess I meant anyone here been burning it in a Cummins. I have several SVO sites that have a lot of good info on this... but most of these guys are using an old Mercedes IDI engine. I was wondering what the long term effects might be on our more modern, computer controlled, direct injected Cummins engines.

I have yet to read a good report on running veggie oil in a DI diesel engine. Some tests show complete engine failure in as little as 300 hrs.

Don't get me wrong... . I play around with this stuff all the time. But, just 5% or 10% max... and only in warm weather. If I had a 12 valve and the more reliable P7100 mechanical pump. . I wouldn't mind using more WVO in the mix.

Anybody here using a heavy blend of WVO (>20%) in a 2nd or 3rd generation Cummins? How many miles? Any problems?

Mike

dse fuel it works, but

Hello

mixed up some fuel yesterday with my new filter and only one pump dse system but using a bagfilter from fsi mixed the fuel filtered for around 4 hr the more you filter the better your fuel is raising the temp of the oil just by pumping transferred to a tank using a water block and a 5 micron filter then out to the truck and pumped in to the tank thur another waterblock filter this took some time to do waterblock filter was plugging up from water in transfer tank(this is not good) tank had 1/8 of a tank left filled to 5/8 full thats 1/2 load of dse veg oil then went to conoco and filled it up 40. 00 at 2. 999 per gallon thats not much #2 13 gals 50/50 mix my 2004 dodge likes this mix is getting kinda chilly at night down to 35/40 in montana when i start it in the am it is a little hard to start but only for 1 min or so then runs like a dream the rest of the day (no smoke just a smell of bbq chicken that what it smells like to me)

today i am working on a heated settling tank the i will filter and water block the warm oil this should work better

going to try a 25% mix in my 05 dodge ,tryed 50% but it smoked and ran real bad when cold.

soon as i get the heated tank done i will post some pic for all to see

thinking that i will let the oil sit for a week then start heating it up to rid the oil of more water then filter and water block the mix then letting it cool slow then filter some more using a 1 micron filter then in to the truck it goes any thoughts on this? what is the best way to get rid of all the water in used veg oil?

think this should do it

thanks for your time

Hi there,

Boy, when you only have 1 day off per week and only home that one day, and having to do a bedroom remodel at the same time..... it makes getting things done very slow... . :{

Well I did the mixing with the processor..... Good results on the mixing, the pumps mixed and the oil got thinner... etc...

Ran the filters in bypass for mixing and then opened the valves for filtering...

**!! Now I have to say that I have a bulk of Waste oil from a place that collects from restarants... . ALL OIL... even the shortning... Maybe 20% a guy says... So I need to thin more for that and try to filter it cold... .

Since I live in the cold climate, I decided to thin my "straight" mix... .

I did

25 gallons oil strained through a collander

15% kerosene

10% diesel

5% gas

19 OZ of the Power service Cetane boost

and 4. 5 Oz. of the DSE Ingredient

Now I did some temp testing in some small jars... .

Straight mix

50/50 of DSE and diesel

50/50 and added some concentrated anti-gel (Antigel is from "Filta-Kleen" super concentrate)

80/20 of DSE and diesel... .

All mixes did good in the freezer a 0 degrees..... (Didn't do the straight mix in freezer. . knew it would freeze)... . all others remained fairly liquid... . BUT, both 50/50's had a white gunk on the bottom... Hard on the bottom. . no shaking to mix it... . might be the shortning or water freezing... .

The BEST result... is the 80/20 in the freezer, it remained liquid, honey color, fairly clear but not as good as BIO... . but Good... . But actually, if you see my main STRAIGHT mix, it has diesel in it... . so it might be about 90/10... .

The 50/50 with anti-gel was put in the fridge at 37 degrees and the stuff on the bottom loosened and on one shake, mixed good... .

Room temp STRAIGHT MIX in the garage did not separate, and still looks good after a week of sitting... .

SO! I did the filtering ..... maybe not enough time... . I was rushed... . and I have to filter it some more... . then I will mix about 80/20 in my truck... was 30 degrees outside this morning so winter is almost here.....

Anyway, thats where I am at right now... we will see what happens later... . when I run in the truck, I will post results...

Eric

... Next item of interest, is how much waste this setup generates, and how do you plan to dispose of it?

Looks good, will watch for some longer useage reports - thanks Eric...

OK, Update!!

I have oil that is mixed with alot of other oil including shortning... . I have done all the mixing as described above and run the filters like 4 hours... .

Now that the mixture is good, I have this in the garage and it is 50 degrees in there ... the cold oil makes the shortning clump and catch in the filter... This makes the sample very clear and good looking..... If you have regular oil to start with then you are golden. .

I have a half tank of diesel, added a few gallons of #2 and 4 gallons of the mix... . this makes about 20% oil... I put this in and drove a few miles to where I was sure it was in the lines and it seems to do well... . It is a warm 60 degrees during the day but I have had a 50/50 mix in the freezer still be liquid so this should do well.

EricBu12, nice set up, what kind of fuel filter do you run on your truck with the home brew? I just came into an unlimited supply of wvo and want to start running some in my 2000, Thanks' Don

I have a Racor 30 micron filter that has a water sep and a heater element in the lower bowl.

I am thinking of making the element to work when the key is on and then be switchable at the dash...
