Lately I have noticed a diesel smell from the engine compartment of my truck. I can't quite pin point it but everything looks tight. Anyone ever have this problem before? Any suggestions where to look or likely suspects (i. e. fuel return line)?

FATCAT:

Mine did it just the other day and I too
had a little problem locating it.

I FINALLY found that the fuel filter was
just slightly loose and was "weeping"
fuel. I had to replace the fuel filter
as the rubber grommet looked bad.

Hope this helps you some.

FATCAT,
If fuel return line or lift pump is leaking it should leave wet spots on starter. The fuel line can also have what looks like moisture on the head near it.
I looked at mine for three months never saw it leaking but saw the tell tale signs that something was, finally went after line, it was cracked good, mostly toward head side where the heat got to it.
Check all fuel lines, return, supply and high pressure(use piece of card board for high ones).
If fuel filter is leaking most of the time fuel will run down fuel/water tube.
It doesn't take much of a leak to smell it.

Had smell friday night crawled under with running found fuel leaking slightly from weep hole in transfer pump, if you need pump go to truck dealer parts house that deals with cummins the dodge dealer wants 194. 00 for pump got one at cummins dealer for 122. 00 my truck a 96 2500 the cummins part number is 3936316 and you need 2 gaskets part 3931059 these numbers are the latest part change for 5. 9b now putting on pump that is a little work much more room if remove starter if the pree heater stays stuck to engine block leave it alone and remove hose and just pull pump out be carefull not to catch oush rod on way out and have it fall in engine new pump comes with push rod in it but like i said it can pull out good luck . the breather hole is located on transfer pump in back near engine block
