I have a 2012 6.7 liter engine and have the same diesel smell periodically in the cab when stopped while using the a/c fresh air. It does go away when I use the recirc but I would like to find the problem and not just mask it. Hopefully someone will have an answer for me. Thanks

First remember that when you stop and the wind is blowing even slightly from behind the smell can enter the HVAC system. If it only does it once in a while that may be the cause. If not check the band clamps. If there has been a turbo removal the band clamps are not to be reused. Everyone does, but they are not supposed to be. Next is the rear EGR cooler gasket to manifold at the rear of the engine. Then the front EGR cooler to manifold gasket, then cross over tube to EGR valve. And of course don't overlook exhaust manifold to head leak. Look carefully for black soot marks using a good light and mirror as required. If anything has been apart and smell happens since then, always look there first.

I think this is an issue that the factory is putting on ignore..... I have a good friend with a 1 to GMC and he's never had an issue..... and sag2 sort of shares that fact... I have it also in my truck... and only worry about it when I close the truck with the AC on with our dog in the truck... on those days its too hot to leave the windows open...

BTW I have a lot of respect for sag2 and the other guys who work on these trucks to add their advice... and understand that at times like this he is just passing on what the factory is saying...

ALSO - maybe someone would comment.... my 08 5500 used to say on the message display when it went into regen... it didn't happen often as we drove that truck like we stole it all the time..... and I've only put 3500 miles on this "new to me" 2013... will I see a display when it regen's... I've not noticed any changes in how it feels when I drive it.... but only with a good load could I feel the regen on the 08

My 13 did it after the EGR service. Sag is right on with what to check. Mine was the crossover on the front of the engine. You can tighten the band clamps till they snap but if the allignment is off on the pipe, it will leak. I removed my clamps and carefully positioned that crossover until it was in there. If I remember, I had to loosen some hardware on the passenger side to make it allign properly. Then I tightened the band clams and then the passenger side hardware I had loosened. That stopped my problem.
