Now that many urban areas and some entire states require smog testing on light duty diesels, how do the trucks that have been bombed fare. See my signature. I wonder if I would have a problem passing smog??

We used to have car/truck testing here in S. Fla but once our air quality went up and stayed there for 2 years hey did away with it. You had to have a probe stuck up your tailpipe:eek: and with your rear wheels on a spinning drum (like a dyno) you acclerated to 55 for 10 seconds and they measures the opacity of the exhaust. Thats how many particles in the exhaust.

 I was one of the first to get caught here in Vegas... I received my renewal in December, but I didn't need to register until January. Well, my renewal stated "No Smog Required". Guess what happened when I showed up at the DMV to register..... uh, sorry sir, you will have to get that smoged". That sucks!!! After waiting in line, now I have to leave get the smog and return. Luckily they have me a "front of the line pass". Any, long story now longer... . I passed with a . 04% I think they said... . I don't have the paper anymore... I was told that I wasn't even close to not passing. I don't think you will either. I did turn off the comp box before I smoged though. The test is just an opacity (I think thats the word) test. They shine a beam through your exhaust smoke and it records how much of the light makes it through and how much is deflected by the soot and smoke. No problems!!:D

Had mine done in Jan. The box was turned off during the test (don't remember turning it off) but it passed. Tech told me it got a little rich at 40mph, don't know what gear he was in or what the rpm's were. I'm good for another 2 years. Add a B1B and some Mach 3's and see what happens next time.

FF1607,

I live in vegas also... . Lucky I don't have to a smog test until Sep..... Where did you go that you had favorable results???

I'm running an ez and think it would be best to disconnect it prior to going... .

I am concerned about smog testing to since I am going to be moving to Colorado Springs, CO soon and I have DD SuperMentals, KSB-1 and Comp on my truck and I am concern about it not being able to pass the test. Would really hate to have to debomb it. I live in Iowa now and it can really smoke not to mention the much hight altitude of Colorado Springs.

there is a smog hut on cheyenne just east of I-15. It is on the North Side of the street. They have the roller that you drive up on and then drive about about 30 mph... I think that was about 4th gear. I think there are only about 4 around town that do diesel smogs. It was about $40. 00.

definately have an opacity test here in o-tax-hio (cleveland donation area)

the old one passed with no problems. the techie that tested mine said he almost never failed a diesel because they ease it up to no more than 40 mph and hold it there before they start the test.

I would unplug the data link cable but leave the MAP cables hooked up so the EZ is functioning as a boost fooler. I sometimes tow with the EZ's data link cable unplugged, and even with the DD2's I get almost no smoke. With the EZ plugged in, it'll make a pretty good cloud if you nail it off-boost, even on jumper position #2!

Nevada Diesel Smog

plongson

What's really unfair in Nevada; If you have a 2500 Diesel, it's only 8,880# GVW and must be smogged. The guys with 3500s are exempt because they're over 10K and it is not required even tho the engine and drive train are identical. Looks like the "Powers to Be" were just looking for another way to generate more revenue for the State coffers. :-(

Guess what category I'm in?

I believe it is a couple of things,

1. ) A way to generate revenue for the state.

2. ) A way to generate revenue for a powerful auto repair lobby

3. ) A way to appease the feds on air quality issues.

It is all BS and just another way to "Lighten" the public wallet. Working stiffs like myself don't have time to fight it we just pay and pay and pay.

FF1607 and RustyJC,

Thanks for the info.

I have to agree with some of the other posts, this is another way for Clark Co. to make a dollar, and it sure doesn't hurt the smog testers...

Thinking one large aircraft taking off from LAS puts more crap in the air then my truck does in a year. And one of those "go straight turn left cars" (Nascar) during the course of the race at the speedway also puts out more then my truck does in a year.

Both of those are big business and untouchable.....

But they can sure get the little guy that has to buy plates.
