Rant about "parts stores"

Citizens arrest stupid people? How to do it?

Okay - we have that song "Convoy"... . and that comedian that makes fun of everything but Peterbilt trucks.....

What else can we listen to besides engine / exhaust rumble that involves trucks/diesels?

Matt

There's other songs on the Convoy album - haven't listened to them for years and years but ol' CW McCall did a bunch of trucking songs. Then there's "King of the Road"!

Back in the '70s, there were a number of people doing "Truck Driver" songs:

Red Sovine was the best known.

Merle Haggard had a number of hits.

Minnie Pearl even had one on the charts.

There were lots of others.

FWIW, "CW McCall" only made 1 album - "Convoy" - that turned out to be a bigger hit than anyone would have ever expected.

My favorite from "Convoy" is "Silverton", a truly awesome piece.

Care to guess why I made sure that the radio in my '03 will play cassette tapes?

"Long twin silver line" by Bob Seger- (about diesel trains though)

"... She's got the finest fastest pulling twin diesels

She's got ninety three cars in tow...

Six Days on the Road... . (I got that Jimmy wound up and the smoke's rolling black as coal. There's a flame from the stack and she's a'runnin like never before. ) OK, it's not a Cummins :( , but it's good visual imagery. Obviously somebody knew something about -71 and -92 2-cycle Detroit Diesels. ;)

Jerry Reed had a few songs about truckin' from the same timeframe as the "Smokey and the Bandit" craze.

I used to own the "East Bound and Down" 8 track (yep) and listened to it quite often. Has some good songs on it.

Speaking of Truckin' shows... "BJ and the Bear" had some good songs too.

Duane

Lookin at the World through a Windshield - Jerry Chesnut, Mike Hoyer

Del Reeves recorded it first, then Commander Cody.

Cory Morrow also covered it on one of his albums. I think he did a pretty good job of it too.

"I wanna sign my name in that diesel smoke

and let the ones that come along behind me choke

and beat this pace i'm settin' everytime I can"

Sounds like the BOMBer's national anthem.

Wow! Greater response than I expected.

Anyone have any info on how to get a VHS (yuck!) or DVD copy of those old trucker shows? I've never heard of 'em nor seen them before.

"Roll On" By Alabamer

There's a diesel motor firing up and reving right in the beginning. It doesn't sound like a Cummins, but I'm not dieseld headed enough to pick it out.

Matt -

You'd asked about SONGS!

These are often available on Cassette and/or CD - check amazon.com.

For MOVIES you might wish to check amazon.com's website. For example, they list the [miserable] movie that was very loosely based upon "Convoy" http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...00000F2Y6/all/ref=dp_pb_a/104-6045569-1138326

It sounds like you missed out on a lot of good listening! :D

C. W. McCall had at least three albums. My favorite was the one about how he's gonna drive Ole 30 one more time.

How 'bout Le Ann Womack. Never heard it on the radio, but is on my CD, "A Man with 18 Wheels". It's on her self titled CD and the "Black Dog" soundtrack.

Patty Loveless, "You Don't Seem to Miss Me". Not necessarily a trucker song, but the music video give you that impression.

The "Black Dog" movie soundtrack-

Driving My Life Away

Road Man

Highway Junkie

The Hammer Going Down

On Down the Line

Nowhere Road

Diesel tunes

Junior Brown had a tune called Semi-Crazy, don't remember the lyrics right off the top of my head, but it is diesel related.

For more info about Bill Fries, aka C. W. McCall, pay a visit to www.techren.net . Lists lyrics to the songs and has links to Mp3's as well as links to amazon for purchasing the cd's.

Nixter

P. S. Junior Brown also has a tune called Highway Patrol, of course none of our members hake ever had a run-in with a Trooper. He also does a version of Six Days on the Road. C. W McCall's Nightrider is a good tune for the 3rd shift drivers out there. Skynyrd has Truck Drivin' Man as well.

I like 6 days on the road by Dave Dudley and Giddy up Go by Red Sovine. There are others but these two stick out in my mind.

My mother was in Branson with her friend, and she bought a cd for me. It's called "Truck Driver's Boogie" BIG RIG HITS vol 1 1939-1969. I was just listening to it the other day. One of these days I'll get to listen to it when I'm on the road.
