diesel swap help

Raceway ford in southern cal

Hi all,

I have a question regarding diesel swapping. Does anyone know a good shop (in the northwest) or anywhere for that matter. I am looking to find out what it will take to duplicate a vehicle we just lost. (Long story short: A F. . ing log truck rear ended my brothers 68 GMC. The driver didn’t even have time to brake and was traveling at approx 55mph and my brother was rolling behind someone turning into a driveway (5mph). Total loss of the truck (grace of GOD he wasn’t killed) The truck was very cool, 68 GMC long box 2wd with a Detroit 4-53NT (turbocharged) and a Clark 5 speed.

Sooo, does anyone know of a shop that can give me an estimate on the cost of a swap like this. I’m looking to establish market value or something like that.

Thanks a bunch.

Andrew

P. S. Any tips on dealing with the insurance adjuster?

Bummer; this may be bad news also, my ins. agent (st. farm) told me the truck needs to be insured for what it's worth mine was covered for 5500 I had it raised to 10K, this also raises the policy (payment) amount, sometimes they will require an apraisal to determen it's worth, good luck. Bob

I think what avanhoosen meant, was the truck drivers insurance co. has to pay for the cost of the truck!

avanhoosen, you might have to go about this a different way. Try breaking down the costs of building a truck like this. Ask a shop, how many hours it would take to install this engine, what is the shop labor rate, what is that engine and transmission worth, what is the truck body worth and so on. The total "costs" of the truck will add up pretty fast! HTH

In dealing with the other insurance company, just tell them in a nice way to replace the truck with a like kind. If they have to have it built, then that's thier problem. I'm sure they will learn quickly it will be easier to satisfy your brother with money instead of another truck. The owness is on them to cover thier liability. One other thing to get them moving qiuckly is to have them provide or the brother to rent a diesel pickup to drive while they are trying to figure out what to do. Also, have the brother get full medical attention, sometimes problems manifest weeks after an accident.

When I repowered my '74 International with a 3-53 in 1978,

Mentzer Detroit Diesel in Sparks, Nevada supplied some of

the conversion parts. I don't know if they're still in that

business, but at the time they were custom building trucks

very similar to what you had.
