Why are you blaming President Bush for the price of oil? He did nothing to drive up demand world wide, notably from places like China and India. The price of fuel is not a government issue, it is a market issue. Hello! If you think there is a political solution, wrong. If the price of fuel stays high, alternatives will emerge, all on their own. There is not a thing a politician should do, except sit and watch the free market work.

SPIKE

Folks call it gouging. . I bought my last house 5 years ago for 265k and if we sell today I could get 650k. Guess I would be gouging to make that profit. Every commodity has a value at the time someone buys it. Gas is not worth anything until someone pulls up to the pump and inserts their credit card. You don't like paying big oil, don't buy it.

It is amazing to me that people complain about the price of fuel and continue to dump it down their tank. Somehow driving a car has become a god given right in this country.

"Gee, I need gas because I work 50 miles from my home, and it is costing me a fortune"

Well, you got that better home because it is farther from the city. Enjoy the home, or move back to the city, or get a lesser job near home, or learn how to ride a bike. Yes I rode a bicycle 50 miles each way(3 years) when my wife and I didn't have the money for 2 cars, gas, insurance, etc.

The "we deserve it all" society has met it's match with real life economics and the basic lazy attitude that has become so much of our lifestyle. Kinda gets my hair ruffled. Want to change the price of fuel in your house, burn less... .

Don't get me started with the the fact we outsurce many of our retail bucks overseas. It's not how much we spend, but where our money goes.

Think about how cheap fuel prices are now, because in a few years when we are spending many times our current defense budget on keeping up with china we will be soooo glad that the fuel is only 7 buck a gallon.

Off the soap box,

Greg

If it is gouging, than don't be gouged!

You two are amazing. Even the President has ordered a probe into gouging on fuel prices.

It's just another diversion from the real facts.

How many 'probes' have happened in the past and how many gougers did they find?

Well lets see, about 2-3 months ago when Congress was talking about an investigation, pump prices dropped about 75c in two weeks.

You think thats a coincidence? :-laf

Amazing!

So you think Bush is "deverting us from the real facts"? Thats cool, I've been saying the same thing for 4 years. Atleast we agree on one point.

Perhaps this should continue in the political forum :-{}

Cut up W's credit cards and watch things straighten back out. He is charging everything he is doing. My banker would have cancelled my cards long ago.

And then there is the cost to replace all the broken and lost Military equipment. The Guard units are going to be hirting for years. But I guess no one will want to be in a guard unit anyway, as most did not sign up for repeated deployments.

They brought the oil men in, but would not make them put their right hand on the bible!

You think thats a coincidence?

This is going to get locked soon.

SNOKING

Yep, just about all of our cruise missiles are gone and we hanvt built one replacement.

WE are spending $200 million a DAY in Iraq, gotta get all those WMD's!!!!! And Bush hasnt paid one penny of the war cost, it's all (almost a trillion dollars) being added to the national debt. And Osama is still on the loose, hey Bush, what happened to your pledge after 9-11 that YOU would bring him to justice? To busy chasing Saddam huh? Let the next President pay for your war! Thats ok too! We dont mind $3 a gallon fuel, after all, God appointed you to be our President, or so YOU claimed (I heard him on TV say that)

The ancronym is dated but still applies:

WMD = W's Mass Deception

It seems to apply still, W is hunting for price gouging at the retail level when it is the record profits at the refining level that seem to be the problem.

Yesterday I watched the Exxon CEO on TV. He said they had to pay world prices for crude no matter where they bought it. Well he is a bald faced liar. The state of Wyoming is pitching a fit because WY crude is suffering a $30 a barrel discount. It was selling for $36, now I guess it is up to $40 a Barrel and the state claims they are losing millions from their severance tax.

Their is an Exxon refinery in Billing's MT and I'll bet they are not paying world prices but they are charging world prices at the pump.

For that matter I bet West Texas Crude is not at world prices either.

Well now Bubba says that taking the federal tax off at the pumps would not help the situation, it would only encourage people to use more fuel.

And to think... I voted for that jerk.

If they take off the 18cent tax, the oil companies will only raise the price so they can take the difference. They keep making the comment that the market sets the price. What they're saying is that they will charge as much as they can as long as we pay the price. We have to have gas. We will pay the price.

It really frosts my *** when I hear these dumb ***** say that if you dont like the price, just dont buy gas. I dont like the smell of scotch broom. So, maybe I just wont breath the air anymore.

(Another chance to vent)

There are a WHOLE lot of Americans, me included that agree with you.

Okay, so some of us voted for him on his first term, but on his second term, we did it again!!! How dumb can we be?

Let the record show that I never voted for the man.

I just continue to take amusement from you guys that continue to think there is a government solution to what is a free market problem. Hello, but world demand for crude is high, so, as a result is the price. If we want some, we have to pay for it. I am glad there is no roll back in the tax on fuel or any rebate as well. What would that short term measure do but drive up demand.

Seems as though most every politician out there screaming about the price of fuel is only pandering to the folks that voted for him/her. Many seem to simplistically think there is a government solution to a world wide free market problem. Not!

SPIKE

I may be one of those simple minded people, but it seems to me that since the oil companies profits are at record levels (actually the largest profit ever posted was from Exxon/Mobil last quarter) there seems to be more at work than just simple market economics.

If the oil companies werent taking advantage of the situation (by price er, profiteering) than I could accept the free market theory.

But I cant accept it based on the posted profit margins.

And as long as the oil boys have their "bubba" or "W" (sounds the same doesnt it?) in the White House, we all are going to be screwed till Bubba-W is out.

I cant wait for that day :)

This "free market" nonsense is just one more WMD - W's Mass Deception.

It's funny that there were NO WMD's found in Iraq but there is a whole truck load of WMD's in the White House.

Who's Jake?

Economics 101: Profit: The difference between cost (crude oil) and retail, or $3. 50 per gallon of diesel.

Hint: If the profit increased 136% that means the retail increased 136% MORE then the cost (crude oil) did.

Think about that. Think long and hard. They are ripping us off.

You can lead a man to knowledge but you cant make him think.

I have no doubt we're being ripped off by everyone up and down the line, I just don't blame the President. He would be last on my list right behind my postman.
