I use my DieselPuter every day for work in my CTD and I can tell you it has performed flawlessly. I am able to connect to the internet via my cell phone provider at 2 to 4 times dial-up speed wherever I have cell single, or I can connect to my wireless network at home or at my office. With an optional wireless LAN card you can also connect to wireless networks all over the country, most hotels and many businesses offer this service free of charge. (Commonly called "Hot Spots"). Also be aware that connecting to another’s wireless LAN without their permission may be illegal, so do so responsibly. I personally use a wireless LAN card provided by my cell service provider but you can also order a Blue Tooth adapter for your DieselPuter so you can access the Internet and e-mail via your blue tooth compatible cell phone. Just check with your cell provider to see what wireless networking services they offer.



The components that we use to make the DieselPuter are simply the best available. Our purpose built cases are made of heavy gauge steel with an isolated rubber mounting system to minimize the vibration to the CPU and easily fit under your seat. The case, high-quality 12-volt power supply, motherboard, RAM, slim-line DVD\CD-ROM and various monitors are chosen by us for one reason alone, quality. We could have cobbled together a system that was half the quality for half the price, but we strongly feel that the sweet taste of price wears away long before the bitter taste of low quality.



With the DieselPuter you can have full on the fly access to all OBII functions via software, with the optional 80 gig hard drive you can store tens of thousands of your favorite songs, integrated GPS capability at your finger tips, and several different software options. Windows XP home comes standard with an upgrade to XP Pro if you prefer. When it comes to monitors there are several different options, I like the bigger size, so I use a 10. 4 touch screen mounted in a purpose built adjustable stand. Both the monitor and stand are very high quality and have lasted for years of heavy-duty use. Our CPU is similiar to that one...........

Except the DieselPuter is purpose built for the heavy-duty truck market, with the highest quality components available on the market. Our steel case is mounted on a specially designed aluminum frame with vibration dampening bags, very similar to air bags on a truck. In fact they act identical to an air bag suspension, dampening almost all of the vibrations the CTD can throw at it.



What has prevented a mobile integrated computer platform from coming to market is that no one from a component side has addressed the heat and vibration issues inherent to mobile computing. We have!!!! Our 12-volt power supplies are specially made for this application, they are internally cooled, able to withstand the cranking cycle and have "intelligent" power, this means that the system turns on with the key and takes only a few moments to be fully operational. The power supply component we use is simply the best 12-volt power supply on the market.



The machine you attached a picture of is called the "cappuccino". This machine was not designed for mobile operations, it was designed for a small foot print desktop applications. Hence, no vibration dampening, a 110v power supply, and a cheap plastic case. The DieselPuter has all the same features as the computer you are viewing this page on, except it fits under the seat in your CTD. The passenger in my CTD was surfing TDR last night about 10:00 pm on my DieselPuter going 70 mph down the freeway at near broadband speeds. I have connection anywhere I have cell signal thru my cell provider for less then $30 bucks a month.



I use the optional light up mini key board for data entry for my work application, the keys are about the same size as lap top keys but they are back light with blue leds so typing at night is easy. I use the 10. 4" touch screen so the mouse is obsolete, the monitors we use are purpose built for the mobile computing platform and work great, and the touch screen is great once you use it.



We will be at the NorCal Dyno day for anyone to take a look at and play with, we can head out on the freeway and you can send some e-mail if you like!!!!!!!!!!

Have you looked at LittlePC? They have a fanless PC about the size of a 5 1/4 cdrom drive and it runs off of 12v. I've been thinking about one of these ever since I saw rbattelle's post... .

I just skimmed the paragraph and the site, but what type of sound output does it have(what kind of card on the 6 channel and how much voltage?) Since it's a touch screen what is the resolution? I have a tablet PC that's stuck at XGA resolution (1024x768)



Are the USB ports 2. 0? Is there possibly an option for a different processor? I didnt see that the video card had its own RAM, is it 512mb of shared memory? I'm asking because I'm interested. I've found creative ways to wedge my tablet PC in my truck and stream the audio to my stereo, but an integrated option would be excellent.

Before I answer your questions let me speak to the purpose of this computer. We designed and selected the components to perform in the mobile environment. Thusly this computer will not be able to run high-end applications or run them poorly. This machine is a streamlined system designed to have low power consumption while still giving maximum performance at a reasonable cost. We have designed the DieselPuter for media playback, navigation, OBDII, internet browsing, and many other PC based software. We did not envision a "gaming" machine in the back seat of a vehicle, but a tool for front seat applications, and back seat entertainment applications.



The sound outputs are line level, for input into an amplifier or multi channel stereo system. It is selectable from 2 channel stereo or 6 channel and has outputs for each depending on mode. You would have to use 3 cables for 6-channel operation while only one for stereo. I personally only use a stereo output to an AUX input of an Alpine head unit and am very please on sound quality.



The touchscreen supports multiple resolutions however I have found a 600x800 with XP's "large" fonts and icons to be the perfect blend of touchscreen usability while maintaining a reasonable desktop area. The touchscreen input is a bit unusual for most people right at first, but you quickly adapt to its unique methodology and you will find that having a touchscreen becomes second nature. Again, I personally attempt to touch my laptop on occasion and am shocked to discover it does not react. The touchscreen interface becomes so natural you will discover you miss it when attempting to operate a non-touchscreen computer.



The USB ports are only version 1. 0, however the speed should be more than adequate for everything you may want to connect to this computer. USB 2. 0 would be a nice feature, however the requirements for the mobile environment really negate the USB 2. 0 need.



About the processor, there are tons of processor options including the P4, but along with speed come a system demand for power and heat generation. Again, we have carefully and diligently tested every conceivable combination out there and chose this combination of components with the sole intention of providing maximum performance, low power demand, and cost effectiveness.



This also applies for video RAM, while not enough to run the latest version of HalfLife or Doom, it is more than ample for DVD playback and 2D processing. The 512mb in RAM is system memory and the operating system divides it according to its needs.



These design principals and component combinations of wide power input range and intelligent power supply make the DieselPuter a complete system specifically designed for the mobile environment.

How well does this stand up to the normal start cycle for a diesel of key on, wait, then crank. Will this cause long term issues with the power supplies or other components since they get power when the key goes on, then they lose power for a moment during the cranking cycle (then possibly run on low voltage right after startup when the grid heaters are on)?

The power supply we use is from the best power supplier in the business, it will take a wide range of voltage impute (8 to 24 volts if I remember right). That is why any voltage spikes or drops are not an issue at all. Cranking is NEVER a problem and the DieselPuter doesn't skip a beat on cranking or when the grid heaters kick in.



Our power supply is designed and built for the 12-volt enviroment, and designed for low power consumption and variable impute which it will receive in a truck. All of the rest of the components are designed around the low consumption power supply, and they also have high performance but low heat generation and low power requirements. Everything is designed and built for the mobile 12-Volt environment. I remember back in the days when I thought that my IBM lap-top and a power inverter was the way to go, every time I cranked the truck the spike/drop in voltage would interrupt the power supply and re-boot the lap top, not any more……………

No Problem! 45 gigs is a lot of music and there are several options to transfer that amount of data over. One, you could use a network cable and a hub and then transfer the music over the 10/100 network. Shouldn't take more than a few hours. Two, you could pull the hard drive with all of your music from the existing computer, temporarily hook it up as a 2nd hard drive in the DieselPuter and transfer that way. Which would probably be the fastest. Or we can install a USB 2. 0 PCI card in the DieselPuter and you can transfer that way. There are several options, my own personal choice would be to fire up the DieselPuter in the house from a 12 Volt power supply, attach the ethernet cable and just transfer that way. Since it's only a one time transfer I think that would be the easiest. Just start the transfer and let it run overnight.



The parallel port could be used for a variety of applications in the mobile enviorment. We currently have a machine in a repo truck and we will be installing a 12 volt HP printer. With the spread of USB the parellel port really has become a hold over I/O port from the old days. I can't think of the last time I actually needed one. However there are some hardware that still uses it.

Tim, we know about the Wizzard G5 which uses a 9 pin serial port, rather than larger parellel port. #ad




The DieselPuter comes standard with 2 9 pin serial ports and one parellel port, and in my truck we added a 4 port USB 2. 0 PCI card for a total of 8 USB ports. Which would bring out I/O to a total of 13 ports. 8 USB, 2 Firewire, 2 9 pin serial, and one parellel port.

Yes! There are 2 pci slot available for other cards. We are using one slot for our cellular internet connection, and the other is a 4 USB 2 Firewire port. You could also setup any other PCI device that you may want.
