Does the Dana 70 rear and Dana 60 front diff on a 2002 3/4 4x4 use gasgets, or is it just RTV ??

I'm going to change the diff fluid next weekend. It has been done once by the dealer, and this will be the first time that I have done it myself. I am pretty green on maintanence for this truck  . If the diffs do use gasgets can anybody tell me the part number ??

TIA

Jeff

My 2001 uses just the RTV. I think that yours would be the same. U probably could look on the diff's where the cover meets the case and tell. The RTV will look like it has oozed out between them and hardened and will feel like plastic.

Hope this helps

JCyrbok. . I do have RTV that has oozed out from under the diff cover and also oozed from under each bolt. But I have a Haynes manual that is good up to 2001 ( I ordered one for a 2002 and when it came it was a 2001, the counter man pulled up the stock number on the book and the numbers for a 2001 and 2002 book matched so ... . ) and in there it says to use RTV and a gaskget. But because the manual says 2001 I wanted to double check to see if I need to order 2 gaskgets ??

Any info helps a guy like me! Thanks JCyrbok !

when I did mine I just used the RTV and there was no gasket.

The best manual that I found was the one that is advertised in the back of the owners manual for our trucks. Cost was like $100 for the two volume set but EVERYTHING is covered. There is not a page in either of mine that doesnt have oil or grease on them. They are well worth it.

diff gasket

When I changed my fluid about a month a half ago, there was no gasket, I had checked ahead with the local parts dealer NAPA and DANA has a gasket for it that NAPA sells, I went with RTV, it fills in any minor casting flaws or scratches you might get from removing the old gasket material.

good luck!

Dave:)

Yep no gasket! I have taken many diff covers off of varios vehicles and none of them had a paper gasket on them. Just RTV it and have a nice day :D

Use "the right stuff"

Not just the right stuff but "the right stuff".

That is what it is called "the right stuff" I used this on my rear diff of my jeep and it is great. Just put a bead around and smoosh it in there. Should hold great. It is not RTV But is basically the same type of thing. I understand many rear end people use it.

Got mine at the local auto store.

Whatever you do the most important part of doing anything with a gasket is to make sure the surfaces are clean and without scratches. I find my wifes green "brillo" pads to work great. They are a plastic material which will not gouge the metal surface but scrub off material well. Razor blades are sometimes used but I try to use them sparingly, they might scratch. Plastic or copper are the best choices as they are softer than the material you are trying to clean. Scratches or left over gasket cause an imperfect seal and this is how things leak. The RTV will tend to seal scratches but with a gasket it is VERY important.

Good luck.
