I've noticed in a lot of the profiles that owners are specifying that thier truck is an 2001. 5 model.

Was there a change in the middle of the '01 model year that was significant ?

And how does my '02 differ from the '01 and '01. 5 ?

I just want to know what I can look for in these threads that will apply or differ from my truck.

Thanks,

Damon

I think the biggest difference was the addition of the rear disc brakes on the 2001. 5.

The 2002 is pretty much the same except some came with out the front axle disconnect system on the right side axle tube.

Front axle disconnect is not the only thing DC removed from 2002's, how about the rear wheel liners, insulation under the hood, etc, etc. Chris

this is the 2nd time I've heard of the front axle disconnect that is not on the '02. What does this disconnect do and how will it affect my truck ?

And I can confirm that my '02 does not have insulation under the hood or rear wheel well liners, geez for $35k + it seems that this stuff could have been kept around. Maybe a good few things to pickup from an '01 or older at a salvage yard... .

The plug for the MAP sensor also changed for 2002. Your 2001 EZ won't work without adapters (ask me how I know  ).

The axle disconnect does just that,it disconnects the pass side axle when not in 4WD. Saves a little wear and tear on the front drivetrain and more MPG. The drivers side axle and spider gear is the ony thing that turns when not in 4WD.

If your truck doesn't have it,then both axles and the front driveshaft will turn all the time. I would consider it a bonus as it makes the front axle assy much stronger (no two piece axle and tube),and it will never freeze up or fail like the vacuum actuator on the disconnect can. Doesn't really seem to hurt mileage much either.

You can look at the back side of the pass side axle tube to see if you have it. If it is one solid tube from diff to knuckle end then you don't. If it is two piece with a large round vacuum actuator then you have it.

As far as the other missing stuff, you can buy them new,or use a junkyard. The hood insulation seemed to make little difference to me,and it's one less thing to worry about getting dirty and ratty looking. The wheel well liners are a must though.

2002 model year trucks built in 2001 still have the axle disconnect. Mine has an 08/01 build date.

All of the manufacturers do it, (de-content the truck) When it is getting close to model change. Biggest difference between 01 and 01. 5 was the addition of rear disc's (that was a big addition) I guess to make up for it they took some trim stuff off form 00 to 01. With the 02's they got the hood insulation ( no big deal, the better to hear the mighty Cummins) and the rear wheel well liners, kind of a bummer on the liners. Also I think they got rid of a grab handle in the interior passenger side (on my 00, there is one on the A pillar and one above the passenger door) They also stopped painting the rad. black. I'm sure others will think of more things. The site that Bob Wagner referred you to is a great site and will give you most of the technical changes. If you are like me it takes months to absorb this stuff. Learn something new everyday and I also forget something I knew everyday so I stay pretty much even

I also think they got rid of the lighted vanity mirrors, as for the radiator i think it looks cooler not painted, so is the consenses here that not having front axle disconnect is acutally better being that there are less things to go wrong???

I just bought an 02 a couple of weeks ago. I have the "OH Sh**" bar for the child bride and vanity mirror. No under hood insulation though. But it is quiter than my 99 was. This one has carpet. Noticeable difference.

No rear cup holders?

No wonder when i was reading the owners Manuel and they showed where the rear cup holders were i could not find them! stupid me to think that just because their was a picture that they would be there!

But there is one thing on the 2001.5's that I can't seem to order!!!!

I have a couple of small grandchildren, and the 2001. 5's have the new rear attachment for the child seats... . maybe you can get them now, but months ago when I tried to order them, they weren't available. I even took the parts guy out to the truck on the showroom and said " See this - I want some!" Well they must have been made in Mars, cause the parts weren't available... .

Can you elaborate on the child seat attachments ? I am constantly changing our car seats around, and it is such a pain to reach under the rear seat to attach the tether clip. Especially on my Club Cab,no rear doors. I have seen a few newer trucks with loop sticking up above the rear seat, but never paid attention to what they are for.

Jim, had to re-read you post to understand what you are saying. I believe the 2001. 5 came out around Sept. 2000. 2001 was an early release around January 2000. So you have a 2001. 5! The . 5 is just something we made up, DC would not REALLY understand it. You have a 2001 with four wheel disc brakes. I have a 2001. 5 with a May 2001 build date. SNOKING

The 2000 trucks are collectors editions :) Limited production run, no deletions and the collector edition rear drum brakes. That's my story and I'm sticking to it ;)

New Seats

The new seats - child seats - use tethers... go to this site and scroll down to where you see the guy attaching the seat to the rear - look for Ready-to-use tether anchors.

The seats have a safety hook that attaches to this anchor - in the case of the pickup there is a metal D ring embedded in a nylon adjustable strap that is bolted to the cab, and extends beyond the top of the seat - on the QC.

This site also gives some good illustrations...

I use this for my grandkids now - when I look at the things we called child seats in the 60's and 70's - wow!!!!!
