Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Difference between 1st and 2nd gen 12 valvers

Does anyone know the differences, besides the pumps, of the first and 2nd gen 12v engines?



Also, does anyone know of a link, or has a PDF version of a manual for the p7100 injection pump, Including internal operations?

Basically, are there any things about the newer 12v engines that are NOT better than the first gen setup?



I took a look at the link and I didn't quite find what I was looking for. Mostly because I'm not much of an expert on either engine.



I'm basically looking for a general rundown in layman's terms.

Ok, can someone please explain to me why the changed the positioning of the rings twice and what it does? Like difference between 8 and 14mm?



Also, what is OBD II?

The changes in the engines were in response to EPA rule changes. The VE pump used in the 1st gen 12 valves worked ok, but it failed the EPA requirements so in '94 the P7100 pump was used. When the EPA requirement got even stiffer, the 24 valve head and the electronically controlled VP44 pump was used. Basically the P7100 pump delivers more fuel early in the stroke than the VE pump so it burns more completely. The other engine changes were to make the different pumps work as clean as possible.

I'm pretty confident in my knowledge of the pumps, I was talking more of internal parts and ability to flow air etc.



I'm just curiouse as to what is better on the newer 12v's in terms of ability to gain power EXCEPT for the injection pump.



Like if the internals (and which ones) are stronger, and maybe they flow better etc.
