Biodiesel is only economically viable if you overlook the cost of production. It requires more energy and fuel from other sources to produce than it returns.
It only exists with subsidies robbed from the pockets of ordinary working Americans who don't benefit from it, don't want to use it, and don't want to pay mid-west farmers to produce it.
That's not correct (takes more energy to produce it than it returns).
Biodiesel versus Petroleum Diesel
Fuel * Energy yield Net Energy (loss) or gain
Gasoline 0. 805 (19. 5 percent)
Diesel 0. 843 (15. 7 percent)
Ethanol 1. 34 34 percent
Biodiesel 3. 20 220 percent
The tabular data doesn't work well here.
See the website below:
Energy Balance / Life Cycle Inventory for Ethanol Biodiesel & Petroleum Fuels
Is it economically viable is other question and probably isn't at this point in time. The concept of renewable is a good one, but it still has to be economically sound.
Bio-diesel is just another hydro-carbon from a combustion stand point and will work in a diesel engine. But as mentioned before, it has few issues that can cause problems (water retention and gelling at higher temps than dino diesel are a few).
as i understand it, and i could be wrong, ethanol is a negitive energy product, it takes more to produce than it provides, bio diesel is a positive energy product, though depending on the source the gain can be decent (not that of fossil fuel) or marginal to the point of breaking even (from a buisness stand point thats also a loss).
again as far as i understand, bio diesel from alge can be yeild a high return on energy while being a carbon neutral fuel. im not a global warming supporter and dont by into it, however im all for saving the enviroment if at the same time we can also better ourselves. bio diesel from alge has that potential, though it has been studied since i think the carter administration and it sill hasnt made it to full production but im not sure why.
ive mentioned it on other threads here, i think bio fuel will find its niche, waste products being turned into fuel has a benifit, but it has to be done econmically, and given time it could possibly be done, however since i dont believe we are running out of fossil fuels, we will never fully be free of them, especially since they are the cheapest form of energy we have.
