I use atf+4 in mine and others. T-cases seem to last forever if they stay full so why worry? I suppose you could use a manual trans fluid similar to what a NV5600 uses, but certainly don't use anything too thick like gear lube.
In my mind, common (and less expensive than atf+4) dextron 3 should be fine for Tcase duty...but don't take my word for it. Stick with factory fill or experiment, "you are your own warranty station" at this point on a 3rd gen.

Don't forget there is an Oilpump inside with a small strainer, a thin liquid is essential for this pump to work properly.

we tow very heavy and have free spin hubs we use the low range in the xfer case to give us two more 2wd lower gears and and a awesome lower 2wd reverse. a few years back we had a front seal go out of one that had atf in it, no leak was spotted because the fluid went into the coupling between the xfer case and transmission, we did not get a half cup of oil out of the case and the chain had so much slack it was jumping teeth (that is how we discovered it ), we rebuilt it and i noticed how the pump is built we changed the oil to a oil like the 50 wt delvac, we have ran this in all of our fleet for over nine years now

i live at 7,000 feet elevation with a ski run on a mountain that is 12,000 feet, it is about ten miles from my yard, about once or twice a year it will get twenty degrees below zero, it is 23 degrees outside now and is expected to get up to freezing today,

Thanks for the reply's .. Brods , I found your reference , didn't see it before. I am warm weather most of the time , as we are snowbirds...

In a recent TDR magazine I wrote about my use of Red Line MTL in T-cases. I’m using it now in my 2014 2500 T-case, but don't have enough miles/years on it to recommend it. Read the TDR magazine for more details/info.

James, just sent you a PM on the truck I have. I have the Redline MTL in the transmission and final gear drive on my 2007 BMW R1200GS. Sure made the trans smooth on the BMW, especially in hot weather.

Cool thanks for the PM, replied.

I really like Red Line MTL and have been using it for years. I'm a BMW GS guy too and like the idea of using MTL in the gearbox, maybe even in the rear drive too. :)
