What would you expect the temp of the rearend to be with 16,000 GCVW and 104 deg. ambient after a long moderate grade. I had about 213 degrees at the pinion area. Is this normal or high. I have the Royal Purple and a Mag hy-tec on order and being delivered. Temp was taken with an infrared spot meter.

Well, I run a Mag Hy-tec and Redline and pulling the Grapevine, ambient aroun 85, pulling a GCW around 18K with 3. 54 gears and running at 65mph I peaked at 195, so I'd say your not doing too bad, but lower is better. I think you'll be very pleased with the cover and oil. I have a temp sender mounted in my cover. Nice thing to have. Things to consider are speed, grade, weight, gears, and ambient temp. If you have 4. 10 gears doing 50mph over the hill on a 5% grade I'd say you're on the high side, but with 3. 54, you may be about right for stock oil and cover. The first mod to my truck when I bought it was the Mag Hy-tec.

Boy, that sounds good to me. I have used the same type of checks on mine and seen 190 at the end of an EMPTY commute with ambient temps around 90. Mobil 1 75W-90 dropped the temp 30* for me, Redline should help you a good bit and the cover as well. Your temps are darn good now, should be excellent after the changes.

Was just going to ask the same question. What would be too high? I was under the truck a few minutes after a run with the trailer the other day and the rear end cover felt a little warmer than I thought it would. I could hold my hand there, but it was pretty warm. I don't have a good way to measure the temp. Need to get one of those cool point and shoot deals.

I have LE607 in mine and don't usually run any hotter than 195 with OAT of 95-100. See sig for set up. I am seriously thinking of going to Delo ESI 85-140 in the rear and Delo ESI 80-90 in the front when I change the lube. Since I live where is gets pretty warm in the summer and rarely gets any colder than 30 in the winter I think that the 85-140 with work better than the 80-90 for the rear axle.

Using the ESI I will still stay with regular change intervals of about 30,000 miles.

My Gross weight towing is close to 20,000lbs and air temps in the 90's I see 185 to 190 max at 65-70. I am running mag-hitec and amsoil synthetic front and rear. :D

I too am seeing the same temps, and had seen the same with my previous truck. 180 to 190, with full synthetic , GCVW 16,000. One thing of interest I've found in all cases, that the temp seems to rise just as much with speed as it does with load. I can see temps of 170-180 empty if I travel at 80mph for extended periods.

beleave it or not, I was taught that 140 is the temp where your body will reflex and pull your hand away from the heat sourse. (I think it was 140). Can't remember what we were testing, but If I recall it was something to do with automotive AC back in the late 70's

I was always told that 10* over body temp feels hot to the touch, but how hot it cnbe and still keep your hand there depends on the person (I'm a wuss):D

i was installing gauges on my truck and set my arm on the intake and that was hot enough. but i have a question... im running some gauges, the ones i thought i wanted. . do i need a rear end temp gauge too?
