Help... ... I have read all the threads on here regarding the digital cameras you all have. But if I take each model to cnet.com and look at the reviews they all have down falls... . I can not seem to weed out a few top dogs. I do not want to spend more than $400. 00... . This is absolutely driving me crazy. I like the olympus c-700 but..... it has downfalls... ... . HELP!!!!!!!!!

Jason

P. S... ..... How about refurbished digital cameras, anyone had any experience?

i do like the sony ones. . the color they can capture is real good. . only gripe with mine is that it takes a while before you can snap another picture after taking one, but that is suppose to be better on new ones. . but with any camera, more mega pixel's, the better. i have a 2. 1MP. i have my eye on the top 2 sony models right now, one is 4. 1MP and the other is 5. 0MP [i can get sony stuff at dealer cost:D:D other wise i wouldn't think of something that expensive:(]

What product is not going to have some downfalls? We bought my daughter a Kodiak DX3600(think thats the model)Pictures I have seen my daughter puts on the web look fine to me. I don't remember how much we payed but I know it was under 400. 00

Canon PowerShot G2. That's what I just got and I love it. Most of what I read about it is positive. I paid $495, which was the lowest price I could find. It went from there clear up over $800!! I have a lot to learn and and have yet to go out try some good scenic shots.

Right now I am leaning towards the Powershot Gw or the Olympus C-2100... ... ... The olympus has a killer optical zoom, although it is only 2. 1 megapixels, I am not sure why i would the higher pixels of the G2? From my understanding the only advantage to haveing the higher megapixels it that it allows you to print excellent quality photographs at a size larger than 8x10. I wont need to print anything bigger. And a 2. 1 megapixel is gives you great 8x10's. So can you guys tell me any other advantage to more pixels? Yes the G2 is an extremely nice camera, you you get a 4mp camera with a 3x optical zoom. Where the C-2100 you get a 2. 1mp and a 10x optical zoom. It s a win lose situation. If not printing larger than 8x10 how can you justify the 4mp G2?

I just bought a Cannon A10 for $199. 00 its only 1. 3megpix but even on lowest resolution it looks good to me. It has 2x optical and 3xdigital zoom, Cnet reviews it very highly. Here is a pic shot on lowest resolution.

It looks sharper than that, somehow between shrinking it and posting it its a little distorted.

More pixels allows you to do better editting. If you don't plan on retouching/airbrushing your pictures, that is, you just plan on taking them and putting them on a website or CD for later viewing, you probably don't need more pixels. Remember, most monitors display around 100 PPI, and most people are probably still setting their screens to 800x600 - kind-of small for displaying a 2500x1900 image!

I was in your same shoes a few months back. I went with the Cannon PS S-30 it is 395. 00 rated like 9 out of 10 on cnet. Its 3. 2 MP has 3x optical and 10x digital. This pic is in 10X digital from FAR away:

Sky... ... Whose 747 is that? Thats not Air Force 1 is it? Thanks for the reply, I was also looking at the Canon PS S-40. Do you know if the S-30 or the S-40 have image stabilization?

Jason

I am not sure about image stableization? Yes it is AF One, Here is another of Bush walking down the stairs.

Battery Life

I don't know if this is still a problem on the newer digitals, but we (the office) bought a Kodak digital 2. 5 years ago. Pictures are excellent. But we didn't know enough to check out battery life first. Although the pictures are great, we can only get a few shots before the battery dies, and we'd have to find a plug to recharge. And with a lot of automotive shots, this is a big problem.

So, we bought one of the Sony Mavicas and while the pictures are not quite as good as the Kodak, we can make pictures all day long outside without having to find an electrical outlet.

Just one more consideration.

Sky... ..... I worked on quite a few 747's in the last 3 years... ..... With your cameras have you had any trouble with blurry shots without haveing the image stabilization? Do you wish you had a more powerful optical zoom? Was your camera zoomed all the way in with that picture of bush waslking down the stairs?

Robin... . Thanks for chiming in here... ... battery life is something I have been worried about but I dont think they are as bad as what you are having to put up with. I have been looking at that aswell while in my search. Not sure what zoom power you have but do you wish you had a more powerful optical zoom?

Jason

So far i havent had any problems with stabilization. This camera has so many features that I havent even began to tap in to them. I mostly use the Auto mode. There is like 12 other setting I can take pics in. I havent had the camera long enough to play with all the settings.

As far as the optical goes I dont need more than I got, and to be honest a lot of people say that a optical pic takes a lot better pics then with digital zoom I cant really see a huge differance. This camera has twice as much features then I most likely need but for under $400 you cant beat it. Its small and compact not big and bulky and ugly and it still has a 1. 8 LCD screen. The only complaint I have with this camera is it doesnt tell you the battery life until it starts to get low. At least I havent figured it out yet if it does. Battery life is very good.

i own a pawnshop. my employees buy and sell a lot of digital cameras. i think we have a fujifilm going on ebay tomorrow. by far the best seller is the sony mavica... . i have the fd81 in the shop for all of the ebay photos. here at home in florida i use the fd 73. excellent camera. idiot proof. takes the 3. 5" floppy. no wires to hook it up. i can put the same battery in my sony camcorder... .

Shendren... ..... Thanks for the input... ... I have sort of ruled out the sony line of cameras... ... . Although after you posted this I am going to go back and take a look at them again.

Ok everyone... ... check out these two links... ..... These two links are pictures of the same items. One link is taken with a Canon Powershot S40 4. 1mp, and the other is taken with the Olympus C-2100 2. 1mp.

If you put these pics side by side, one has definite sharpness and color quality over the other. The Olympus with the 2. 1mp in my opinion has the better quality pic of the two.

Now, I am not sure what resolution that each of these were taken at. Actually I think the Canon was set on a higher resolution.

Has anyone printed 8x10 photos with a 2. 1mp camera? I was told if you were not going to print anything larger than an 8x10 that a 2. 1 would be all you need and you would still get photo quality pictures. Or do I need to go with atleast a 3mp camera?

Alright, enough typing, what do ya'll think?
