why would left side headlight be real dim??? all other lights work fine..... it is dim on high or low beams..... even when checking the fuse is also very dim... . [voltage tester is real faint at fuse]. where could i be losing voltage if all the other lites work fine???????
Make sure that your ground connection for the left headlamp assembly is good.
Check the voltage at the plug for the headlight, allowing the voltage to pass through to the normal ground. I'm assuming that, since the headlights are in a plastic housing, there is a grounding wire on the plug. If the voltage is low, try grounding the voltmeter probe directly to ground. If the voltage is okay with the probe directly to ground, then you simply have a poor ground on the plug; if the voltage is still low, there is a broken conductor or bad connection in your hot wire.
Since you said that the lights are dim whether on high or low beam, I'm betting a pair of fairly new socks that it's a bad ground.
Assuming that the truck in question is the model year 2001 Ram in johnsogw's truck profile has no Daytime Running Lamps and has unmodified front light wiring you would lose the bet.
Model year 2001 uses switched ground in the headlight circuit. All headlight wiring from the multi-function switch, through the headlight switch, to ground is common to both headlamps. His problem is somewhere between fuse C (15 A) in the Power Distribution Center and the Multifunction Switch.
The only wiring between fuse C and the Multifunction Switch that is common to both filaments of the left headlight bulb is from fuse C to terminal A (violet wire) at the left headlight bulb. This is where I would start checking.
the 15 amp fuse was shot... . thanks for the help... ... why would it be dim if fuse has blown... i'd think no power at all... thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have had instances when a fuse blows strange things happen. Sometimes current goes in mysterious directions!!!! With most things electrical it is always good though to check fuses first then GROUNDS.
I have the same situation on my '95. Sometimes the right headlight is dim. If I hit the brights, then go back to low beams it will be bright like it should. Think that's a ground problem?
