Sounds like one of my rod bearings has bit the dust.

Truck has 230k miles, all stock except for tuning.

I've spoken to one shop and he said swap engines and the guy who will be doing the work said it's the most cost effective way to go. Kind of leaning towards just rebuilding what I have and running with it. What would be needed? Rebuild kit and turning the crank?

What are y'alls thoughts?

I would be positive first. It sounds like it, is not good enough for me. Sound travels a long ways sometimes.

Is the rod bearing a guess or has the engine been torn down?

Educated guess. Gentleman who has it now works for the local Dodge dealer does work on the side. Said from what it sounds like, it's the rod bearing. I could slightly feel it when it started.

If it hasn't been done yet I would pull the fan belt and run it for a minute, that will eliminate a lot of noise makers.

Spoke with him today and he said that he can crank the engine and it runs/sounds fine. Then a minute or so later he can hear the knocking. Said there is a distinct metal on metal sound that denotes bearings. And he said he can smell it.

I have seen only one rod bearing failure and it was an oiling issue-it had been run with out oil.I have seen people claim bearing noise with a bad injector and also scored cylinder/piston.

Same here, operator failure only. Other than that the rod bearings do not give trouble.

Feel it? SMELL it? Hmmmm. A cylinder kill will sniff out a noisy rod bearing. I agree rod issues don't happen with B's. If it did, it's easy enough to pop some caps in frame.
Something had to happen to bring this on. Pulling the belt is an excellent idea.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have a chat with him tomorrow about the above. Even if it's a burnt piston/scored cylinder, it's still not an easy fix.

Unless all the oil has leaked out, wouldn't you still be running with oil?

A bad belt tensioner can make some wild noises, especially the all steel construction ones.

Not when the customers never check the oil.......one case was an Power company bucket truck that was parked on a slant with low oil in the base.......SCREEEEEEEECH....Boom....

Was thinking about it last night and I know a gentleman who had a 2008 as well. He had the EGR and DPF intact while running Royal Purple. The service manual says that even while running synthetic, to change the oil every 7500 miles. He got busy and went 40k without changing it, or even the filter. Went to start it and it would not even turn over, seized up.

This does not apply to your situation, just bringing it up for discussion.

It is mandatory at our dealership to change the rod bearings after an EGR cooler failure on ANY Mercedes 900 series engine. Have seen several failures (including one of my own delivery trucks, driver was dumping a couple gallons of antifreeze per week in the thing and didn't tell anybody!!! Cost me an engine.)

I have long wondered IF a 6.7 was operated under the same conditions would the rod bearings suffer. This would be a result of long term neglect of course but I think it could happen.

When
the 6.7 egr coolers fail(very rare) they leak into the egr system only. Some will leak enough to steam clean the egr tubes and valve.I have never heard of any issues that go beyond this other than low coolant related issues

I recently DX'd a Doosan loader with a blown EGR cooler. It hudraulic'd the engine. The cooler is parallel and over the exhaust manifold and coolant has a clear path right back into the ports. The EGR valve is a butterfly midway on the 180 from the manifold. Coolant was leaking out from that shaft. I couldn't believe my eyes!
I'd say the rod bearings were stressed a few times there :-laf

I've always wondered....do you work for a Dodge dealer?
