When my truck was new and had the stock paper element the filter minder would suck about 2/3rd down. I bought myself an AFE stage 1 kit with the Proguard 7 filter and an outerwear. I replaced the intake muffler with a piece of pipe as well. This combo sucked the filter minder down about halfway, and reduced my full throttle egt’s by 75°. I ran this filter for about 25,000miles before cleaning it, after I cleaned it sucked the filter minder down about ¾. It took less then 10,000 miles before it was in the red again. At first I thought my filter minder was defective since a buddy has a 05 Dodge with the factory filter and his filter minder hardly gets sucked down at all. We swapped filter minders and there was no difference. My AFE was in the red, and his stock filter sucked the filter minder down about an1/8th. I have recently bought another Proguard 7 filter, so I can wash the filters at my convenience. I was surprised when this brand new filter sucked the filter minder into the red with or without the prefilter.

I am happy with the filtering capability of the AFE. I do an oil analysis at every oil change and silicon has always been below 8. I’m just disappointed with the ability of this filter to flow air. I need to find a better set up.

I am thinking of swiss cheesing my factory box and running the stock paper filter, as this is my cheapest option. I just don’t want the loose too much of that sweet turbo whistle.

I’m also considering going with a BHAF, or a Scotty 5 system.

I’m looking for feedback from anyone who has run more then one intake system on their truck. I want more flow, but don’t want to sacrifice filtering efficiency

I don't have any aftermarket intake but I remember reading that some performance turbo's (I didn't notice one in your signature) suck enough air that you can't use a 'sock' over the filter. How much of a difference does taking the 'sock' off make to the filter? Do you live in a real dusty area?

I have noticed that the prefilter causes the filter minder to be sucked down about 1/8 further. I do a fair bit of driving in dusty conditions. I don't mind cleaning the filter and prefilter, but when a new filter right out of the box causes the filter minder to dip into the red, I'm not too happy. Especially when a 05 with the stock filter shows almost no restriction.

My truck is stock other then the exhaust, and intake.

Carl, Mine was doing the same thing. I got rid of the AFE proguard7 filter and went to the larger AFE filter which has more surface area and has the indented cone instead of the capped cone like the proguard7. It fits fine on the Magnum intake and no longer pulls down the minder. I also have the torque tube.

Carl,

I too had an AFE pro-guard 7 intake system and I suffered the same symtoms that you are having, I took and cut seven 1-1/2 inch holes in the bottom and fender well side of my stock box and I am now running the Amsoil Ea air filter, I can't move my filter minder now.
