Howdy all, got a question for you. Went to a friends exhaust shop yesterday and unfortunately the muffler and converter fell out of the truck right before I was leaving. My question is this, after putting a piece of pipe in so I could get home the truck now has a unusual buzzing noise at idle. This noise disappears upon acceleration and reappears dramatically at around 2300 rpm. Now do not get me wrong, I like my diesel noise however at 2300 it sounds like one of those crappy cars with the annoying lawnmower exhaust sound. :( would an expansion chamber help? Has anyone got an idea what went wrong. Thanks

Can you isolate the noise to know exactly where it is coming from? Could be something as simple as a rattle in the system, or a clamp not tight? Or might be the "drone", but I thought that was more limited to us overvalved guys.

I can only hear the noise at the exit of the exhaust pipe. kind of a buzzing sound. I thought about drone except it happens at idle and is real obnoxious at rpm. Sounds like a motorboat/lawnmower.

I know the pain you are feeling. When my cat fell off during muffler replacement I had the same problem. It was fixed by clamping a 3/4 inch piece of angle iron to the straight piece of pipe where the cat used to be. I used two 4 inch hose clamps and abot 40 inches of angle iron.

Could not bear that sound any longer:mad: . Went to the muffler shop and had muffler installed. Ordered 4" kit. As for the sound it sounded like one of those cars with what we used to call a monza tip on it. NOT very good sounding for a diesel.
