At 130k (and having some death wobble issues), I replaced the trac bar, converted to inverted "T" steering, and put in a new PSC box. The trac bar and steering conversion were done first (along with an alignment) and the death wobble was gone. Still wanting tighter steering, I ordered a PSC steering box. Surprisingly, there was no improvement at all in the "slop" with the new box. After having a friend turn the steering wheel today, the ONLY movement I could find was in the shaft coming out of the steering box where the pitman arm attaches. I'd swear it moves an 1/8" side to side.

I know there are aftermarket brackets to stabilize the shaft, but I don't think my original box (with 130k on it) had this much movement. I can understand using the stabilizer brackets to prevent wear and eventual movement in the shaft, but to have one this loose right out of the box? #@$%!

My disappointment with the box aside, has anyone used one of the steering stabilizer brackets to successfully eliminate the side to side play of the shaft once it's become loose?

Thanks in advance.

I have the PSC box and the DSS. Not sure if mine has play or not... I just drive it and it seems fine.

Why don't you call PSC and discuss it with them. They have great customer service.

Dave - Did you install the PSC box and the brace at the same time?

I will call them as soon as they're open. I just discovered this today (saturday).

1/8" side-to-side is pretty 'normal'. Look at the leverage the pitman arm can apply to the output shaft. It's a wonder these things run as long as they do.

I would not expect a fresh steering gear to have that much play. At least not in the first 1000 miles or so. Every 4WD with such a long output shaft should exhibit steering slop.

Yes, I installed a DSS some time after replacing the steering gear; this had to be 100K miles ago, maybe closer to 150K. All of the play and slop vanished. It was like driving a brand new vehicle. I put up with the slop that reappeared for a long time, until the dawn broke over marblehead. Sure enough, the steering shaft 'adapter' on the input of the steering gear was loose. *REAL* loose. And it had been tightened up not toolong before. I degreased it and applied nail polish to the set screws. The steering's been nice and tight since.

For what it's worth, the Flaming River steering shaft I installed 200K miles ago is still working nicely, other than those set screws coming loose (even with their lock nuts being set plenty tight).

Provided the output shaft seal is still doing its job, install a DSS (or equivalent). And be ready to relearn how to drive the truck.

I installed them at the same time. At that time they gave a better warrenty if you bought both at the same time. The DSS helps protect the steering gear.

The gear lash is adjustable in saginaw steering boxes. Just a screw and locknut. They may not have it to your liking and may be able to do something about that. Contact them.
