Bseg; I can tell you as many others can, the drums come off really easy with the method you mentioned. I tried first without doing it and it was like they were welded on. I did the rotating thing both in reverse and forward, then they broke loose. The lug nuts are a must!

I haven't had a chance to try out the larger cylinders yet, I have to replace the no-good soft spring that went south on me when changing the cylinders.

A note was made to loosen up the emergency brake cable,... is this necessary if the brake is released? Mine has enough travel in it now to make you wonder.

It is not necessary to loosen the e-brake when making brake adjustments unless it has been overtightend previously. If the strut bar between the shoes just below the wheel cylinder has a little bit of free play when pushing endo that is all you need. ----Sam

One more thing concerning brakes and squeaks, I have alsways noticed that stock pads come with beveled adges and replacements don't. It seems like the edges aborb the heat, expand, and end up at a higher plane that the rest (causing squeaks) I always take a file and bevel the edges of all of the brakes I change. They last a long time and never squeak until they hit the wear bars!!!

well i just posted in the products forum about this very topic. i found an outfit out of Ohio that sells cross drilled rotors for $92 each($96 for duallies). and recommended a kevlar/carbon fibre mesh pad that sells for $61. the whole order came to $256 shipped.

I think i will go ahead and buy them unless someone can give good reason not to??

BTW it was on www.pureperf.com

let me know your thoughts, Please.

thanks,

Todd

Thank you so much everyone for all your input. I plan on taking this task on next week while I have a few days off work. I will report back anything interesting that I encounter.

i just went to the web page and the rotors for the 2 wheel drive are about double in price to the 4 wheel drive. how could this be ?? I would think they should be close in price. Is there a big difference in 2 wheel VS 4 wheel rotors ??

I went ahead and put in an order yesterday. I'll let you know how things work out.

these were the cheapest price i could find in a hurry. I think the next step will be new front lines once i convert to my airbags and lift it.

Two more questions.

1) What size is the large nut that holds the rotor assmebly on the spindle? I need to get a socket that will fit it.

2) When removing the old studs from the rotor I've heard of several different methods, one being a double hammer method. Using two hammers is one sitting on top of the stud to prevent from the blows of the other causing damage to the threads?

Thanks again,

Bseg

dphillips - The 2WD have the hub as part of the rotor. Those I priced all included the studs and inner and outter bearing race (no bearings). The 2WD rotors use more material, and require more machining.

EDIT - And yes, almost twice the price. :{

Bseg---We use a 36mm or 1 7/16. Either should fit. If you don't have access to a press the double hammer method works fine---Sam
