While towing my trailer on last week it appears that I may have overheated the turbo. The housing has turned brown. According to my EGT gauge I never reached temperatures over 1200 degrees pre turbo. Talking to Bill K. he thinks that because I was able to boost as high as 32 psi that my turbo may have gotten hot, he believes that the HY35 is not made to handle boost higher than 28 for any length of time. I wanted to put this out for general discussion and to let everyone know this could happen. I do not notice any difference in how the truck runs so I don't know if anything was hurt or not.

its OK

there is a clearcoat finish on the HY35 turbo that discolors with temperature.

MY HY35 discolored this past summer while towing back to Rushmore.

Its no big deal :)

What method did you use to disable your wastegate?

Me too Me too........

Yup, mines all discolored. :D :D

Of couse it was slightly discolored even before I modified the waste gate. 32# WOT now.

Doesn't seem to have hurt it or the performance (What little there is). That tells you what kind of temps the intercooler is trying to overcome to give the Cummins some cooler air. If they could find an economical way to get past the lag I would definitely go for a larger turbo.

Kwikkurt's set up sounds interesting but not much will spool up like the HY. Someday I might check one out and see how bad it gets. Still paying off all the other mods for now.

Bob I used a different method from the other posts I read about. I put a big hose clamp (the size of one you would use on a dryer) around the wastegate. This affectively closed the wastegate completely.

Well I feel better that I'm not the only one to see this brown color appear on the turbo housing. Has anyone taken their truck in for warranty work and had this pointed out or had their warranty disavowed

My new 16cm from piers got the same color after it was broke-in but it is just fine and no problems are noted, mine also makes 32lbs but nothing odd is done it's just a non-wastegated housing.

I guess I loaf along way too much in my truck as I have 55,800 miles on my truck with about 25,000 of thoses miles towing 6,000 lbs trailer and toy twice of which were over the Rockies. My turbo is still the original silverish color.

I guess I need to start driving it like I stole it.
