While towing 7000 lbs. through ID, MT, WY, and SD this summer I always had to turn the cruise control off while climbing grades to keep my EGT(pre-turbo) from going overtemp. My max boost with the banks stinger-plus system is 21 psi. Towing this load netted 11-14 mpg.

More power would always be nice. But why do any fuel increases if I can't keep the temps down. I have cut holes in the air cleaner box with a hole saw. My exhaust is the banks 3. 5 inch. I currenty run at 70mph on the freeway. Faster than that seems to feel like I am pushing it. EGTs run around 650 with about 6 lbs boost, running empty.

I am thinking, can I do any harm by disconnecting the wastegate on the turbo?? More air equals cooler temps, Right!

I am going to take a trip this weekend from Boise through Vale to Ironside towing 16' trailer w/ a few ATVs. Going to give it a try.

i have the same problem, only i have been losing power. . thats because my pump timing is advanced to far. . i also have the banks on my truck... what you can do is adjust the wastegate open for more air flow... thats what i have been told to do... i get 21 psi of boost also... thats my 2 cents..... good luck

When i was running the banks 14wg housing i found that disconnecting the waste gate actually made my temps climb quiker after the boost got past 28-29 psi, there is just to much gas at the top end to push through that small of a housing.

But the 21 psi that you are running now is not enougth with any major fueling mods,

to increase boost you can adjust the waste gate rod , or get yourself an EZ, or TST boost ellbow and use it to adjust you boost level.

banks

hay guys I also have the banks stinger set up < (turbo, 3 1/2 exhaust, air filter ) I have only owned this 92 ctd 5speed for six months ( my first deisel )

my ???? is this the best set up ? what about this size turbo ? please explane more about the wastgate EZ or the TZT ELBOW ??? were can I get one of those ?? also have you guys got any info on < some company in utah putting larager fins on the inlet side of the intake from the air filter !! has any body done it !! thanks loco 1

I ran my '91 w/14cm2 banks for quite some time with the waste gate disconnected. I finally put a valve in the boost line and it took about a month before the waste gate started working again. So your solution should include keeping the waste gate moving so that it doesn't freeze up.

Try it. If you dont like it, you can always hook it back up. Your EGTs are about right at cruising. The 14 isnt that much smaller than the "ideal" 16, so you should be fine if you have (intercooled) stock injectors. I only ever hit 28psi in my 92 and 93 with a 12 w-g housing, less the gate hook up.

Part of the reason your EGTs climb at >28psi is due in large part to the efficiency range of the H1C turbo peaks about there. Mine start to climb fast when I get to about 35psi, maybe a little more, with my PDR35-18cm. But mine's a slightly different ball of wax- no intercooler, some porting, bigger impellar, side, stock exhasut side, etc.

I've run the Banks 14 for about 10 years now and after a lot of expermintation here's what I came up with. I set the waste gate to fully open at 30 psi - this shows 28 psi max boost on my guage at WOT on the road or on the dyno. I now have Piers HX35 and he recomends a max of 32 psi so I will re-set my wastegate to that pressure. EGT's max out at 1150 pre-turbo - towing under heavy load - 8000 lbs. Running without the trailer I see 800 to 900 max such as Cabbage Hill - in Oregon in 5th.

Well here is what happened this weekend. Trailer I pulled w/ ATV's weighed approx 2500 lbs. Only had one hill (Brogan) where I had enough grade and room to run in 5th gear with the pedal to the floor. Max boost went to 28-30 psi and the EGTs never went over 1200 (pre-turbo) Which is a great improvement!!! I did notice that at the end of the trip I burnt more fuel than normal. Duh- I had my foot into it more to try to raise the boost. I was happy with the results. Will have to try it again with a heavier load to see what happens. Thank for the replies. It does make sense I think to attach the waste gate hose and adjust the linkage to open the w/g at 30 PSI to keep the linkage working. I will try this adjustment with the engine off and use shop air regulated to 30 PSI.

Again it is great to be able to keep my foot into it and not overtemp !!!
