I just thought I would share my Discount Tire (DT) experience with you all. Last year when I bought my CTD, I went to DT to replace the stock Michelin LTX M/S tires with something to fit my needs. I ended up with a set of Pathfinder ATR's (Load Range D's). A few months ago I went in to get my tires rotated and balanced. This is when I learned that these tires were not right for my needs. The salesman told me that I was "way overloaded" by hauling 7-10 ton with Load Range D tires. Now I wasn't sure if he was trying to sell me new tires, or if the first salesman just didn't know what he was selling.

Due to an unrelated experience that resulted in tire damage, I went to the local DT to repair/replace the tire. I was then informed that they are not making this tire anymore, so I would need to purchase 4 new ones. The salesman gave me a partial refund for the miles that I had not used on the Pathfinder tires, and he told me I could head home with 4 brand new Michelin LTX M/S tires for a price of $330. I was not happy about the situation, being that I had to pay for new tires, but I understood that he could do nothing with the Pathfinders. I told the salesman that I would rather have Bridgestone tires than Michelins (merely preference) and he said there was no way, I would have to settle with the Michelins.

When I got home, I had a sense to call the store to see if they could order Bridgestone tires, just to see if I was told the truth. Sure enough, the salesman said they COULD get Bridgestone's if they called around to other suppliers. So now, in the past year, I have been sold TWO sets of tires that do not suit me.

After many phone calls and a few e-mails, I finally got tires that I were Load Range E AND were aggressive enough for my tastes (Bridgestone A/T Revo's). Total expenditure on tires in the last 14k miles: $1100  . I'm not saying DT is an evil company, just be careful wherever you shop.

Discount tire store

I have had problems with them also. Don't recommend snipping the tires. I cant believe that I payed to do that to my tires. After a few hundred miles the tires were ruined. Next Discount Tire installed Parriles or how ever it is spelled. The first tire blew out on the right front, next the left rear. The rear tire had a twisted tread( broken belts is my guess) . Discount tire told me that I was overloading my truck also, I told the sale person that I must have had too much in the glove box because the first tire was in the right front and a few other things also. Finally the sales person asked, what do I wont. I wont those tires off my truck before some gets killed, like me . I payed for Michelins and I am very happy with those tires. I did get a recall on the Parriles, what a experience. I may got to Sams next time to buy my Michelins. Good luck on what ever you use, if there is a better wearing tire I would like to know about it. Jimk

I have been happy with Discout Tire online, but their retail shops are somthing to be desired

Sipping tires is great especially for winter traction, assuming it was done properly, which was probably not the case at discount tire.

tirerack.com

I used tirerack.com a month ago for my 01' and was extremely impressed. Not a single flaw in the transaction. Try them next time and maybe you'll have the same luck i did.

I can only agree with the statement about "The Tirerack," (www.tirerack.com).

I bought tires from them twice so far (not for the truck), and the user-friendliness of the site, as well as the ease with which the transactions were executed impressed me.

caveat emptor......

... ... let the buyer beware. it isn't Discount Tirre, it may be a particular DT store and incompetent staff. I have used the same DT store here in Phx for almost 20yrs and always got what I wanted/needed for every car, truck and TT in the family. Even to the point of insisting on top of the line Michelins for the wife's car when the clerk dude convinced me that the off brand was "adequate" and could save me $$$$$.

if the sales pitch doesn't sound accurate, ask for the manager and get his opinion. then if things should not go well you have a couple of folks to roast up their management chain. And don't hesitate to ask for the area/district mangers name and telephone number so the folks know you are serious about quality service.

in case you haven't gathered the fact, I work in customer support (for a worldwide computer firm). if incompetence is not pointed out "up the chain" it will continue... . be fare, be firm and do your homework...

I've used both tirerack.com (tires for my 1996 3500 were installed at a nearby NTB store) and Discount Tire (Michelin XPS Ribs for the 5th wheel; Michelin LTX's for the wife's Durango). I didn't have any problem whatsoever with either of these firms.

... what he says; Discount Tire is pretty much the tire king in the Phoenix area, and they are the only place I would ever buy tires from. I have had absolutely wonderful dealings & customer service with them over the past 25+ years. Also had the same experience with them in Nevada and Washington as well.

I also have used Discount tire and been very impressed with customer service there. I took 2 tires into a DT store that I had bought used somewhere else and after mounting the first one found many leaks in it, they took it off and reinstalled my original tire and wouldnt let me pay them and I offered 3 times. They also fix all flats for free including my wheelbarrow and riding mower.

I too have used Disco tires. They tried to sell me tires they had in stock, instead of what I asked for. I said no thanks, and they somehow got them in the next day. The consumer must be informed and not depend only on a salesman. That's why sites like these are so good.

I don't shop for tire anywhere except Discount Tire. I have always had great service. I especially appreciate that the use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts.

I live in IL and all I can say is there are 2 stores in Joliet. One on RT30 and one on RT52. The one on 30 just plain sucks!! From manager on down. I had nothing but problems from the day I walked in. I vowed to never spend another cent at Disc Tire. I went to the other store for a rotate since its free (the store on 30 did not have time) and these guys changed my mind nothing but fast great service. Its all in the store. I just can not believe they keep some of these managers.

What is sipping tires? Does anyone have a picture?

Thanks in advance,

Sipeing is a fancy term for making thousands of narrow slits in the tread of your tires. It supposedly gives you better traction in the snow, but they seem to be louder on the road and wear more quickly. It would probably be cheaper to run the vehicle in 4wd (if possible) or add some weight in the rear.

I think it was illflem who said he will never run another set of tires without them being sipped because of the increased traction From what I remember he get pretty good mileage out of his tires too.

Know what you want when you go in. I recently called the manager of a DT here in Vegas (which I have followed from store to store for the last 3 years) and he hooked me up with 4 Michelin LTX M/S's in 285/75/16 for $180/tire installed.

Don't leave it up to them. Ask if they have what YOU WANT, then go get it. :)

Nuthin but good to say about DT here.

I tell'em what I want and they get it; for a better price than anybody else too.

Must be the store manager drives a chebby.
