disposing of used motor oil

For all of you out there who do your own oil changes, where do you dispose of the oil? (legally)

The landfill here in town lets us dump ours free of charge, they have a big tank there.



Most of our parts stores let us dump free too.

I put mine in the fuel tank... free fuel and extra lubrication for the VP-44.

Most of the parts stores around here will let you dump for free. We also have a recycling center that will accept used motor oil and antifreeze.

I do as Keimmo does, put about a gallon or two per tank until it's gone, after letting it settle for a couple weeks and not dumping in the last couple of cups out of the bottom of the bucket.

I'd do that but my waste oil bucket has brake cleaner, gear oil, motor oil, brake fluid, ATF, dirt and metal, etc... bascially everything but antifreeze. Not running that stuff in my truck, that's for sure!

With diesel fuel costing around $2. 50 a gallon and used motor oil being free fuel, how many gallons of oil would you have to burn to pay for buying a new drain pan that you will use for ONLY motor oil and keep the old one for everything else? I have a couple of pans for ONLY motor oil and ATF, and a couple more that I use for everything else.

We built a oil stove to heat the garage

and we use use motor oil. I put It In my buddy garage because he has electric heat. It works well and all his friends bring him there oil. We got a oil tank at the dump for free. It had a tiny hole which we fixed. Can't beat free heat. We are going to build one this summer that burns coal,wood or oil. It a little dirty though soot some.

I can either go to walmart or my trash service, Waste Management will take 2 gallons per week, so it takes a couple of weeks to get rid of after an oil change if I go that route.

Keep ti clean from other fluids and dirt, filter it and run it back thru the fuel system!!

My local AutoZone takes 5 gallons per month and the local Quick lube takes 5 gallons per day per customer. At the quick lube, they make you fill out a form with your name, address and how much you leave. Not sure why.



When I lived up in MA, we used to drop our used oil off at a camper dealership that had a used oil burning furnace. I may consider getting one of these when I build my shop someday.

In Mass. it's pretty easy to get rid of waste motor oil. By state law, if a retail outlet sells motor oil, they must accept waste oil in return. If I want to be a PIA at the local Wally World, I bring it to them. :-laf To make it easy on all involved, I bring it to my local Sears Auto Center & dump it there. My local highway dept. takes it also for their waste oil heater.

I'm not sure how clean burning they are, but a guy could collect alot of free oil and save on heating with one of these.

I let my company have mine. We use it in a waste oil burning heater for or shop.

Some counties, e. g. Gallatin, BZ, MT, have collection tanks. Free for non-commercial residents. Might check with you county.
