This is not good

not good at all

Went to work to day every thing fine ... worked my 12 and fired the girl up to take me home . .

Checked gauges all green so I pulled out under normal acceleration and noticed a slight miss like the Tack would drop 1 line then pick right back up pretty quick ... .

Huh

Well it keep doing it under normal acceleration it would increase about 5 RPM then Drop 1 then over till I reached the MPH I was aiming @ then it would drop down 1 Rpm then jump up over and over about 3 mins between ... . I hit cruize @ about 60 and it still did it ... ...

I was running the comp on 3x4 so I turned it off and it got worst .....

Just about home and things get ugly ... . loss power then picked up FP is 15

then droped off big time almost died and threw a Code got back ahold of her and pulled in to the drive way started up my hill and NO POWER ..... No Power at all I am watching my gauges and I see my temp gauge start rising and rising fast before it went in the red all the way I killed the motor ... got out to check cooling looked good

Got back in fired right up then I made it up the hill missing like hell around the bend then was running out of power again and the Temp gauge was climbing Killed her again.....

Now its out in the drive way BRoke Down ... .

I need a Reader Guys Im working 4pm-6am the next 2 days if anyone is local and has a reader please call me @ 342-7645 And I will get out of bed and go W/O sleep if you can come over so I atlest know where to start I cant get my codes read because Im broke down

Sound like the VP$$ is dieing And the Temp was rising because of no fuel I dont know I need help Badly ... . I have to get some sleep So IF no one wakes me up I will be back on here as soon as I can .

TDR please come though For me

$2000 Suncoast Tc and VB will be here tues day

Looks like I will be spending a bit more than I thought

Im A Nervous Wreck

I noticed that you have a 2002, if so, you can check for codes by turning the ignition on,off,on,off,on and do not start. The codes should flash on the odo. I have a scan tool if you want to drive to Pittsburgh, but I do not think that will do you any good.

1. Check the codes. If you have a p0216, p1688, p1689, then start looking for a new VP44.

2. If the engine temp is rising past around 220, the Engine fan will kick in. It is extremely loud. Did this happen when the the temp rose? The temp sensor could be going south. The wire harness that plugs into the temp sensor could have developed a short. On my truck, the sensor end developed a short and the temp gauge would rise fast (less then 1 second) and peg at the top. Replacing the wire end fixed this problem (note this was not a problem with the sensor, but the wire harness lead).

You can check the temp sensor by hooking a good Multimeter to it and placing the sensor in a pot of water. Increase the temp of the pot of water and measure the resistance (ohms) of the sensor. I will have to get the specs out of a service manual for (delta) in resistance as temp rises, but I doubt it is this sensor.

If the engine sees an extremely high temperature (over 240), I believe it will begin to de-fuel in an effort to drop the temp. This could be part of the problem. You will probably see a p0217 with the over-heat. You can manually check this with a real temp gauge, though I doubt it actually over-heated.

3. If it is over-heating, is there anti-freeze in it? Check for leaks, smell around. If it is full and it is truly over-heating, is the radiator blocked? are there any kinked/pinched coolant lines? Is the water pump turning? Is the serpentine belt broken?

4. Could be the APPS (you will probably see p0121 or p0122). You can try and recalibrate it. Just disconnect the batteries over-night. Reconnect them (at least 4 hours disconnected), turn ignition on with out starting, and push throttle to the floor slowly and release slowly.

5. I would also clean any engine grounds and wire harness connectors (disconnect with ignition off, clean with electronics cleaner, pack with di-electric grease).

6. One other thought, but not sure with your symptoms, could be a CPS (Crank Position Sensor). Usually when the fail, the engine will just mysteriously die, leaving no codes; but I have seen them begin to fail causing similar problems.

Sounds related to a crankshaft position sensor - but I don't think '02's have one - I seriously doubt VP-44 in this case, increasing temperature requires MORE fuel, not less - might want to check to see if the turbo is siezed up, low/no boost will cause rising coolent temps because the fuel isn't burned properly... Of course, there's possibility of broken/bad serpentine belt, stuck thermostat, or failed water pump - those would trigger a few similar effects as well...

All in all, sounds like a sensor or connection issue...

Im awake well I going to go out in the rain BTW it was raining when It died this time and if you remember a few weeks ago I said it died in the rain going up my hill for no reason and started right back up and was fine.

I will be driving a Rav-4 to work for the next few days... :<

I cant bealeave that it may not be my Vp..... AWESOME !!!

I still need a reader

Anyone Know Csevers Phone Number

DM

Well started right up This morning and acceleared smooth at a stop while making quick punches of the pedal . Not much smoke as normal .

I checked the Antifrezze LOOKS GOOD

Cerpentean belt STRONG

Turbo fins spin like they should . .

let it idle for about 5 mins and temp was still on the dead end

Still trying to get a reader

All It will tell me is the companion Code

Well As the Cummins Turns,,,,,,,,,,,

Went out and Placed in (D) and gave her about 3000 RPM and it was cutting out and missing after that round of abuse it starting missing under petal Punches in (N) ???????

Called a Cummins Mech. He said bring it out. .

Called a CTD bud who showed up with the quickness ,,,,

Started the 10 mile trip with him Ahead and I was missing around a bit and temp was still on 140 (0) ..... all of a sudden the temp Pegs and truck BEAPS throughs more codes and the check Gauge light came on and the petal Goes dead... . Motor is running at idle and no matter were I push the petal the RPM dont move from Idle DEAD PETAL like it wasnt even there but the truck was holding idle perfect then the temp went down and I regained control through the fuel petal went about 2 miles and the temp peg'd and truck was defueling evidently when the temp gauge reads so high the VP goes into a defueling state ???

I pilled over and ran out and put my hand on the radiator cap... . it was COLD !!!!!!!

The Temp sender must be boned ??? and its causing a Defuel ???? but when the Temp is reading normal the truck still Purges So What the crap ??

Its sunday so he told me he will read the codes tomarrow I will let you guys know ...

A BIG TAHANK YOU to Josh Rose for pulling me 5 miles with what seemed like a 2 foot chain to the CTD shop.

Any Thoughts

DM

ECM ??????

Mad Catcher ??????

$800???

Does the MAd Catcher replace the ECm or is it a reprogram ???

Well off to work I go See you guys at about 6 Am

Hopefully I get more reply's like The first one and less like sleddys and Gore-Head

:-laf

HOT ROD VP OR A CATCHER MAY BE THE FUTURE I DONT KNOW ????

As I re-read you post for the 30th time I think you have it peged... . (I HOPE)

Thanks for the offer and the help

Hopefully with this added info You can help More

DM

Mine started surging and sputtering 1 week after I replaced the VP. But my ECM threw 22 codes, both codes for high and low voltage for pretty much every sensor and then some. My temp gauge also pegged... Fortunately my ECM was repairable, it appeared to Marco that I welded on the truck with the ECM (Batts?) connected. The only problem is that I have not welded on the truck. Nor did I short the batt or the alternator either. I may still have an electrical gremlin, or worse yet a cracked VP circuit board. However, the truck is running fine with a loaner ECM, so who knows... .

Im Home from work,,,,1 mo' to go then I get 1 big day off and Im back for 2 more 12's ... . SIGH... ... .....

I know I had a slew of codes but I have yet to hear what they are ... . I need my truck ASAp So I may just get a replacement ECm if I need it and I will just bomb in the distant future with a REDLINE Fueling box after my 3 hole injectors get boring to me ... . LOL

MAy get some kind of word today ????

Personally I hope its my temp sender

it sucks to not know if its going to be $200 or $2000

Exspecally after droping 2g's on the trany ..... and another $300 or so to have it installed its suppose to be here tuesday NOW if I just had a truck to put it in.

Sleepy time C-ya all Between 1-4 pm

Later

I have had almost the identical problem and this connector below was the problem. That is why I now have a spare one in the top of my tool box. Symptoms with the gauge were exactly the same (just a note, it did not cause all the peformance issues you seem to have). Let me know if you can get this part, some times these things are hard to come by.

I would start with the wire harness connector:

Mopar# 05013951AA

Image available: #ad

Coolant Temp Sensor (I think it was around $30, but it has been sitting on my shelf for a long time)

Cummins# 3865346

Thermostat (can't remember if this is a 180 or a 190)

Cummins# 3954194

I will bring up the sencor and see what he says . .

I have called him a few times today with no answer ...

Off to work

Does anyone have a ECM for a 2002 AUTO that you can loan DM. I spoke with him his is throwing false codes.

I have an 02 catcher auto here but DM scares the crap outta me :-laf

whats the plan? :{

Yes, truck + welding = :{ . Unhooking the ground off the battery isn't enough I guess, fried a computer on a buddies d'max a while ago with both grounds unhooked, now I unhook the ECM/PCM or any other CM's :-laf directly at the source. Wish I could be of more service DM, good luck!

the plan

From what I was told (he was at work) He took the truck to the cummins guy. The cummins guy said he had umteen codes in his ecm and told DM to try and find a loner to verify the codes are false. If so,DM has to fork out the $$$$ for a new unit. He asked me to post a reply and see if anyone out here could help him out. Thats all I know at this time.

I have another batch of ecm 's coming in tomorrow morning. Have DM shoot me his "ecm code" that is stamped on the cummins tag on the ecm. The sequence starts with the letter "J"

I would rather use a stock ecm vs. a catcher reflashed ecm if possible

sorry dm :(
