2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission A/C Problem

I've been running all over the east coast over the last 2 weeks and until this morning my tubo has cut out after running up and down hills for anywhere from 2-7 hrs, morniong or afternoon. The petal feels dead, but, If I let off the throttle completely for about 3 seconds I can get the turbo back, but it only last for a little while, anywhere from 5 seconds to 5 minutes.

It happend once last year in April, but stopped after I let the engine cool a little and filled the tank, but didn't happen again until this trip.

Mu fuel pressure gage reads 8-10psi pre filter through the whole event. I'm also getting the death code P0216(injection timing fault), with an OBDII reader.

Q-do the fuel people change change our fuel in April, like they do for the gassers? If so, could this be because the stations are trying to drain their tanks?

Q- is the VP44 the injection pump? if so why does Advance Auto want $2100 for it when Cummins asks $200, or am I getting my pumps mixed up?

I'll be making a 15000 mile trip with my daughter at the end of the month and I don;t want to have to pump the petal the whole way.

Q- What do I need to fix or replace?

Make sure that you are asking them for the right pump. VP44 is the injection pump, and it shouldn't cost more than $1000-1500 at any one of the venders on this sight. The HRVP-44 or Hot Rod VP-44 shouldn't be over $1600-2000 I don't think. The $200 pump is the lift pump. Do a search on here about the lift pump, and the injection pump, and read till you are blue... or red in the face, (mad). I have the same problem you have, and I am right now deciding if I want to upgrade to a Helix cam, and 12 valve lift pump, or if I want the new mechanical lift pumps, (RASP, or MITUSA). Good luck. Around here they do switch the fuel, there is a winter blend, and a summer blend.

Does the FASS system replace the VP44 or the lift pump?

I read another post about people getting 19psi at the filter, should I replace the lift pump?, I', only getting 10-12psi at idle, and 8-10 cruising at HWY speeds.

The FASS replaces the lift pump. However your fuel pressure is fine and lift pump appears to be healthy - no need to change it.

The VP44 injection pump (the drivers side front side mounted thing with the 6 injection tubes arranged in a circle pattern) is what is producing the 216 code. The dead pedal symptom is characteristic of a failing VP44. Should cost you no more than $1100-$1200 to change it yourself, or $1300-1400 to have a shop change it.
