Just rotated the tires. The front hub is attached with one large nut that says "Do not reuse. "

Does the 2000 model have permanently lubed bearings or do I have to repack them?

How much does that nut cost?

Thanks,
Bobby

Funny you should ask 'cause I just replaced the wheel bearings on the '95 at 113k. No,they are not sealed "perma lube" bearings . They are an inner and outer just like any old car or 2wd truck. It might be a good idea to check or repack them after 50-75k of hard use,but I don't think it needs to be done as regular maintenance.

When I took off my bearings, they still looked good with no scars and rolled just fine, but the grease seals were toast. I replaced them because one brake caliper locked up creating so much heat that the grease ran out of the hub. Seemed someone drove it that way for a while.

Mike, I didn't realize you'd picked up a 12-valver already #ad
Is Emily going to join us for Dyno Day so you can BOMBvoy up there with both rigs?

Vaughn

No,both rigs aren't going,just mine. That 160 horsepowered 12valver isn't worth putting on the rollers... yet! #ad

Bobby,

The front hubs on a 4X2 '00 are "lifetime" lubricated. I don't know whose lifetime they are using, but you don't have to repack them.

Look at page 214 in your Owner's Manual, left hand column, about half way down the page, "Front Wheel Bearings".

What about the 2k 4x4? Would you recommend them being repacked?

I have 15700 miles on my truck and haven't touched the bearings yet.

Thanks

Kev

Reading my service manual I seem to remember that we must "inspect" the front wheel bearings. does this mean jack it up and shake the tires? I really dislike "permanently" lubricated anything! I want to service and maintain my truck for the next 500k miles/30 years. My 1970 1/2t 4x4 350ci lasted that long and it was a gasser. 4 engines,2 transmissions,2 transfercases and more tires than I can remember.

Great White,

I rotate my tires myslef every other oil change, and while the front end is off the ground, I always check, the wheel bearings for excessive play. I also rotate the hub and listen for any bearing noise. It's a good time to take a look at the brake pads while the wheels are off. On my previous trucks, I repacked the bearings every 30,000 miles.

I plan to continue this practice of checking the bearings on the '00 even though the bearings are "lifetime" lubricated. I'll just omit the repack every 30,000 miles.

I just don't know whose lifetime we are counting for the lubrication. #ad

Thank You.

I looked at the owners manual and it is as you say.

I should have looked at the manual first.
