Well I am caught in the middle of changing diff. lube, didnt do my homework, dont know if I have limited slip or not, bought used from private owner. Need truck in morning 150 miles to Doctors appointment. Can you tell if it is limited slip. My equip. tag says spicer 70, the diff just says Dana. Its a 98 24 valve quad. auto. Tried to find answer through search but no luck. Need to know if i need that friction modifier or not? Would it hurt to drive without it a bit? HHHHEEEEEEELLLLLPPPPPPP!

Limited slip

I think the tag under the hood may indicate if it is LS. You can determine if it is LS by looking at the carrier assy. If all you see inside the carrier is the side gears then it is not LS. The LS has a clutch pack behind both side gears. bg

My truck has a metal tag attached to one of the bolts that says that I have a limited slip diff .

If you do not have a tag you could also call your local dealer and they can run your vin numbers and tell you what options you have on your truck.

Jack up the back end. Make sure you block the front wheels first. Put transmission in neutral and make sure the parking brake is off. When you have the back wheels in the air rotate one of the back tires by hand. If the opposite tire rotates in the opposite direction, then you have a standard differential. If it rotates in the same direction as the one you are turning, you have limited slip. Good luck.

Yes you can drinve it without hurting it. If it is LS, you will need to add the modifier but it can wait a few hundred miles.
