in three places, than transplant two fingers from my good left hand to the right hand to change fuel filters on my 98 12v or is there any easy way. Had the truck two days and my wife and I were stuck on the freeway after I hit the running lite switch but actually was the spare tank which I had taken off the day before. Opps. Had to pull out the owners manual and prime it pushing the little bulb to get it started again. So far my diesel experience is not so good.

I feel your pain. About a year after I bought my 1996, I installed a Prime-Loc fuel filter relocation kit. Now, after ten years, I am still glad I did.

educating yourself on your truck is gonna save you! by signing up here youve got a good start. i wouldnt worry too much about the trouble youve had as they are not much more that frustration. i feel for you on the fuel filter though. i had a 97 and i remember taking about 20 minutes to get that nut to thread. if you plan on bombing your rig, id look into aftermark pumps like the fass to make the filter change easier(though your LP now is a very relaible setup) on the plus side, you p-pump is almost bullet proof(though i happend to kill mine :D) so running it out of fuel is nothing to sweat.

ive had a 97, 06 and now an 02 CTD. i got sick and tired of my beat up 97 because i was always working on it. the 06 was to much $$ for what you get. bought the 02 in hopes of getting back the fun of my 12v. i miss that rig like hell now(especially since i see it around town alot).

Like the main man said " Well I thank ya very much. " I have big arms and bigger fingers, and a very old body. So twisting and turning is'nt easy to do now days.

At the stage of life thru GOD's blessings I can buy most anything I want. But I bought the 98 because I wore big belt buckles most of my life. Did'nt want a bigger one above the front bumper. Walla bought a small grille dodge. Paided thru the nose for it but if I'm blessed with another 10 years I might be able to work on it. Never had anyone do work on any of my vehicles. Tractors, cars, trucks, lawnmowers, etc. Done it all. So keep your cards and letters coming in. Again thanks.

I agree w/ Matt Shumaker. You get get a prime-loc on that and you will almost want to change your filter. And they loook good.

I know I should and will regret it if I don't. But being the tight wad I am the $175 I will have to part with could justify a lot of knuckle blood. Ah, the heck with it Geno's here I come.

Here is the easiest way to get the job done without having to play Gumby. I had developed a problem with the factory fuel lines and when looking into what to do I weighed in the fact that I HATE crawling over the front end of my truck with the leveling kit(I should have rethought that deal as its been a year and I still do not care for it,but, that another story). Anyway, with fuel line having 160,000 miles of Central PA weather and now needing replaced(factory lines are not available at all for the second generation trucks anymore) I chose the FASS.

It killed two birds with one stone,No more playing Gumby to reach the filter as creeper will do and Eliminated the factory fuel line which were a problem. I know its a pricey option but it is a option... ... ... . Andy

KnightR,

From one old guy to another; be patient. I assume your ’98 12 Valve filter is mounted the same as my ’96. I still don’t like to change mine but when I’m careful and don’t get in a hurry I do OK with it. I do have the advantage of being tall and that helps, but a step stool would compensate if you are not so tall. There have been numerous posts here that have been useful to me (moving the relays out of the way, etc. ).

If you have a history of doing your own repairs on tractors and trucks you’ll do fine with the routine maintenance on your Cummins.
