Here I am

Do I have to go with the Jacobs Vacuum pump or can I go with an aftermarket option?

Heard a buzzing/clicking noise coming from under the hood today and noticed my exhaust brake was not working. Upon investigation it looks like the vacuum pump has bit the dust. I believe the Jacob's vacuum pumps are non-serviceable. I know when I call the dealer tomorrow to check on price they are going to say over $500. 00.

My question is can I use a vacuum pump from BD, Pacbrake or Banks instead of the Jacobs vacuum pump and are they less expensive?

Mine made it 160,000 miles but do I have to go with a costly Jacobs vacuum pump or is there a less expensive alternative?

I was wondering if anyone was having problems with these, I just put mine on a couple weeks ago and dam they are noisy... . I am having a problem that I cannot find in that every once in a while will not engage and since it is wired manually it is not electronic...

Don't know about the others, but my Pac Brake uses a compressor, not a vacuum pump.

I've sold/installed/run about 10 us gear systems including the "superduty" version on my truck now (nothing to do with ford). All electrically activated, no issues. After running the SD I would own no other- works well in ALL RPM ranges.

I hope we can find a solution for this brake. The price for a replacement unit from Dodge. $695. 00!!!!!

Somebody makes this pump and replacement parts should be available from them. I have two of the pumps "both bad" in my possission. I would call or send a pump to somebody to fix. Any of you internet savvy people should be able to find who makes this pump.

How does the pump mount? My 6. 9 ford used a belt driven vac pump for the brakes, only about 150 bucks, maybe something could be modified to work :) . My B-D exhaust brake uses air.

How many miles on yours before they went bad? I havn't got an e-brake for my 05 yet & was going to get the Jacobs do to warranty. I had a Banks brake on my 01 & it worked flawlesly for the 4 yrs I had it. I do like the idiea of the air compressor on the pac brake that you could run other things off of.

What shys me away from the pac brake is the post I read about someone loseing a motor that Dodge didn't want to warranty do to the pac brake.

mine does this every now and then. my cause is the switch. if it moves at all on the shifter then it doesnt get contact properly. i just wiggle it around a bit and then it works fine. an annoying problem, but i deal with it.

I remember reading something on this e-brake when they came out. If memory serves me right I thought Jacobs said they tested both a pressure system and a vacuum system. And they had higher success rates with the vacuum system so that is what they went with. For those with bad pumps what is Jacobs doing as far as warranty

The best deal I can find locally on a new pump is $585. 00 (Doug Smith Chrysler/Jeep-American Fork, UT) One dealership actually tried get me at $911. 00!

My first one went south at 67K and the second at 129,660. At least they are consistent. I called all day trying to find out who makes this pump and where I could get service parts. Finally I called Cumins Mid-South and they looked up the pump using the Mopar number. They could not find it using the Cummins look up thought. They can get sell it for $248,00 plus shipping and tax. That beats $700. 00 any day.

Wow, I went into Cummins and the guy said he couldn't get it for me, I am going to try that in the morning. Posm, what year is your truck?

It took some looking to find it. Many parts people would look and just give up. When they do the Cummins search it showed a Customer supplied part "Dodge supplied".

When the guy crossed the Dodge number, he showed 62 in stock in the main warehouse. I called Cummins Mid south in Mobile. The first thing they wanted to know was the engine serial #.

My truck is an "04".

Update

Well after tinkering for an hour tonight I finally figured out that my problme is not the switch, I think I have a bum relat, every so often it will not have a solid click and when it does that sure enough no power to the solenoid... . So tomorow I will go get the relay replaced for will just build my own setup...

Well crud, so far this morning when I try to get this part through Cummins Rocky Mountain they tell me they cannot find it, that they cannot cross reference. I called a Dodge dealer and asked if the Mopar part number crossed over to a Cummins part number and also "no dice. " I even called Cummins Mid-South and the one fellow I talked with said he couldn't find it either. I am going to keep calling a few other Cummins places and see if I can find a more savvy parts person.

Posm, what is the actual Cummins part #?
