shown in the photo is the 1-2 synchro assembly, and the outer ring is cracked. My questions are-

1) Do I really need to replace this or can i put it in and forget it? Remember, I never use 1st gear except when towing heavy, GCVW in the mid teens. And, when towing, I can float into 2nd gear. Or is this something that can come apart and cause headaches down the road?

2) If I should replace it (I know, I SHOULD, but that isnt the question), where can I get one?

Thanks,

Daniel

No photo but I can tell you that you best not even TRY to forget it. I just sold the only spare I had to a member in Canada. When that assembly scatters, it is really bad news.

Can you just have someone weld it up?

Roger (g/f's boss, guy heling me with this underaking) mentioned that, but what would that do the temper of the surrounding area? I admit it is just a stop for the 1-2 synchro, but still, this is the truck I plan to keep til at least SOP3, so I want to do it up right.

PS- James, I apologize for not having a pic in time for your reply. I had trouble uploading a 500K file:rolleyes:, and had to get Christina to shrink it down to fit.

Technically it would probably weaken the area around it, but by how much is the question. I doubt it would be enough to matter and I'm sure welded it will be stronger than putting it back in there broken. ;)

The problem with welding is that you then have to clean it up for fit. You are better off replacing it with a new one. Balance, fit and tolerances will be your problems with welding it.

I was internet searching for getrag information and ran across www.drivetrain.com/getrag5speed.html they seem to have a bunch of parts. I don't know anything about them. Like I said, just went to Google and put in "getrag 360 parts".

After having an old transmission in a Studebaker lose an OD planetary at 70 MPH on the freeway and skidding, I am a big fan of sturdy parts. The chance of bodily harm to me or others is too great to chance. Not to mention the vehicle.

Just my $. 02

I definatley would NOT put it back in cracked.

If you want to get it welded, you'll want to clamp it back together first if that can be done. I wouldn't let just anybody try to run a bead on that part. An EB or laser weld shop will make it as good as new with minimal (or no) post weld machining.

Next choice would be a place that specializes in tooling repair. But that will take some machining to remove the weld bead.

I doubt that metallurgy would be affected enough to bother you if the proper method was used for the repair.

But I'm guessing a new part will be much cheaper.

Good luck finding a new part.

I'm the guy in Canada who got the part from James. After looking this part over, I think that if you don't mind double-clutching for shifts to second you could just remove the rings, springs and balls from the synchro assembly and use it that way. It won't match the speeds of the gears on a shift, so the way you describe your use, you would need to double-clutch when doing a three-two downshift.

After going through a rebuild and re-install of one of these, I highly recommend waiting for the part and doing the whole job while it's on the bench. It's just too darn much work to pull it out again if you aren't satisfied with the first result.

Try placing an ad in the classified. I got a couple of responses, including the one from James.

Get a new part but if that is the first gear syncro, remove the broken part altogether and shift into second then to first when and if you want first. It would be like the older new process trannys that didn't have a syncro on first.

But best would be find a part.

I hope you took the above advice. I found a big piece of one of those rings in the bottom of the case after I sheared the input shaft in that truck I sold you. Not sure if that's what caused it, but...
