my 97 has about 145k on her, and im going to pull the front cover off and replace the seal behind the harmonic balancer, what can i check for while ive got the cover off?

If I was in that deep, I would tab the pin and check the bolts to make sure that they are tight, and replace the fan belt.

Yup. This is exactly what I did. Everything was OK, but I now have piece of mind.

I dont like suprises. :D

I took my time, it was very hot & humid out. Took me alone about 5 hours.

Biggest PITA was getting that seal to start straight.

PITA #2 was the windshield washer. It didnt want to come off of the shroud.

I pop mine off and leave it next to where it lives. It's too hard to pull all the way out. The only time I've had it all the way out was when I R & R'ed the pump.

There are 5 bolts inside the cover that hold the gear case to the engine block. 1 is above the oil pump. 1 is next to the KDP. 3 are behind the camshaft gear. Two of them can be accessed directly through windows in the cam gear. The third (lowerst down, toward the oil pan) can be checked with a bent 10 mm wrench through one of the windows. I remove the 4 that I can, and they are usually oil-soaked. Spray clean the bolts and threaded holes, blow dry, loctite and reassemble. I check the two on the cam retainer plate (through the windows in the gear), and the 4 holding the oil pump.

well i didnt expect this much response guys i sure appreciate it, and i will let yal know how it all goes in a few days when i get her done. thankfully like i said before i have someone here that can give me a hand and make sure i look and fix the things i need to. again thanks for all the help

I just had the cover off of my '97. The KDP was out about . 040" from being bottomed. I did exactly what Joe D. said with the case bolts(one wasn't as tight as the rest). I also did the same thing as Extreme 1 with the washer bottle. The easiest way I've found to remove it from the shroud(same for the overflow bottle) is to take a long flat-blade screwdriver and slip it between the bottle and the shroud where the buttons on the bottle are located. It will slide right off the shroud then.
