Do the DruaMax trucks use a lift pump?

Just curious, one of my neighbors is having issues trying to prime his 09 DuraMax. Got some water in the filter that froze and pushed the o-ring out. He claims that the system only uses the common rail high pressure pump to suck fuel from the tank. Can this be right?

There is a lift pump built into the back of the cp3 on a gm if my memory serves me correctly. Just gotta crank on it.

So now it makes sense, Filter started sucking air, the more he cranked the engine the more air it sucked.. the harder it is to make it prime.

When my neighbour ran out of fuel I had to hand prime the system. There's a plastic bleed screw and finger pump (a little rubber dome) on top of the filter housing. According to the manual, crack the bleeder and pump until fuel comes out.

Problem is start hopping them up them you run out of fuel .
