A while back i posted something similar to this thread about normal EGT's and i am in question again.....

With the mods listed in the sig i am wanting to know if these temp's sound normal..... Seems to me there getting lower and lower... .

The temps outside are about 35 degrees... .

so with that in mind my EGT's cruising at 50mph with 5-7psi of boost i am seeing and staying in the 400-425 range for EGT's... .

At idle it sits around 200-225... .

now if i really get on it WOT i can watch the EGT gauge easily jump right up to 800-1000 but as soon as i let off the go pedal it drops to 400-600 depending on speed and boost... .

I am just wondering if these sound normal for the weather conditions outside... . Cause i know last summer it would idle around 350-400 and would eventually work there way down to about 275-300..... But also last summer i wasn't runnin a SMARTY either so that may have something to do with it.....

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK... . THANKS

Guess the pyro placement would help... lol

My pyro placement is pre-turbo in the front half of the exhaust manifold... .

Doughboy, your egt's sound a little on the low side, pull out your probe and clean it off. If that does not work, replace it, mine, at idle, never gets below 300/325 in neutral.

The Smarty does an excellent job of keeping egt's down at cruising speeds, pulling my small trailer, Smarty sw#6 / TST 4/0 late twins program, pulling hard, egt's never exceed 1200.

I tend to believe your cruising temps are slightly low, but your idle temps are suspect, seem low. Glad to see you are watching your gauges :) , they are the best indicator we have!

Do i replace it with the same brand thats in it? I have dipricol gauges so i am assuming i must replace with dipricol probe? Does those probes go bad on occasion or something? THANKS

Ok i did some playing around just to see if maybe my probe was bad or what not and here are the results... . Personally i dont think its bad but i have been wrong before..... So tell me what you think now...

I have been running SMARTY on SW3 so thats 60hp + timing, and like i said before my EGT's were low and my truck sounded more like a 2nd gen than a 3rd gen.....

Well i posted this cause it seemed to me that my EGT's were running a bit low as some of you have said on here... Well i went outside and re-programmed the truck to SMARTY SW2 60hp + NO added timing... ... And from right off the bat at idle it now sounds like a 3rd gen again... . (2nd gen sound didn't bother me at all)... . And now tell me if my EGT's sound right... At idle i am running about 300-400 degrees... haven't taken it out yet and ran it to get the other temps..... But from what i am seeing/understanding now is that SMARTY with added timing must have some aggressive timing in it to make it sound like a 2nd gen and lower my EGT's that much.....

Now with that being said tell me what you think now about my EGT's... . Do those sound normal now(i will get cruisin and WOT temps and post in a bit)? With that being said you guys think that i will harm anything running SMARTY with the added timing with it sounding like a 2nd gen and lowering my EGT's that much... THANKS... .

Or do you still think i should check my Probe... . ????

Not completely on topic, but have you updated your smarty.

I got mine and loaded it into the truck at the end of December, and it sounded like a 2nd gen. After a week I went and did the update and it took some of the rattle away.

I am running level 5 with the mild torque management.

At a WOT run I will see 1100 Post Turbo and that is in 5th gear. I don't know if it will go higher because I put it into 6th and back off there. I have read that cummins says 960 post turbo. I am planning to move my probe to the manifold soon.

With my stock truck, my idle EGTs are around 200-300 now. I have the diprocol gauges too. What could be the issue? I have cleaned the pyro as well, as it is pre turbo. Any ideas? I don't have the smarty.

Thanks.

On my truck the Smarty w/stock injector timeing dropped egt big time. Also the cooldown to 300deg was real fast. I do have aftermarket sticks and the rattle was very bothersome. Also with that timeing I saw my coolant temps run higher than normal (even though egt were at least 50-75deg cooler than with TST timeing), scared me. So I tried the aftermarket injector timeing and that removed the rattle but seemed to run a bit warmer than with non-adjustable TST timeing. So back to the TST timeing for me.

My truck is acting the very same way

As a matter of fact, It makes one wonder if the truck can even run that cool. I put DiProcals in a couple months ago... can't imagine being dirty probe already. My truck runs awesome, idles at 800 with Smarty, 750 without. My overhead mileage has shown over 1 mpg gain in just a couple days even with my spirited driving too. I hope the egt gauge is accurate as I really rely on it now. the temps are in the 60's here currently. I'm running SW#7 with the most current updates too. Did you figure it out or are thing the same for you?

Yeah i kinda figured it out... I called Bob and asked him if those sounded normal with runnin a SMARTY and he said yeah the timing is pretty aggressive so i tried a new probe and came up with the same results..... To me its sounds kinda low... But he says its perfectly normal and it wouldn't hurt anything so i am still running the programs with the added timing as cause i also picked up 1. 5-2 mpg hand calculated... . I do notice for some reason going from the latest updates to the current ones that were just loaded on 3-21-07 i lost some of my timing rattle... . Those cummins must really love the added timing though..... Cause for a while i was running SW2 without timing then i started runnin SW3 again with the timing and the truck is alot more responsive and seems to idle smoother and the throttle seems to snap alot more evenly than before... . Hope that helps... Keep me posted

Glad to hear that its normal. My truck idles very smoothly and don't have any timing rattle that I can notice. Runs like a freak compared to stock... what a ride! Thanks for the quick response. Have fun!
