Is there a silencer ring in the turbo on our motors? If there is what is the correct prosedure for removal. Thanks

!st Gen; No, 2nd Gen; Yes

Which TRUCK? 1st Gen doesn't have one, The 2nd gen 12 Valve and subsequent trucks do have one. This is from a post I made in the 3rd Gen forum.

"This is for a 2nd Gen truck, Should be the same in a 3rd Gen.

1, Remove the tube from the Airfilter to the Turbo inlet. 2, Looking in the Turbo inlet there is a black Snap ring, Remove it by prying it toward the center and outward, with a small common screw driver and/or awl. It should peel out in a circular orbit. 3, The Silencer Ring should then fall out. If not then get under the inside edge with an awl or a hook scribe and pull it out. 4, Reinstall the air tube. sorry for the ignorant question, but what advantage is there to removing the silencer ring? Also, is it: a) much louder, b) effect emissions ?

Thanks.

Not a Dumb Question at all

It is A; Louder B; no effect on Emissions (Smoke, not Noise  ) Itcovers over a couple of slots in the compressor housing, cuting down on the noise. I like the sound of a turbo without :D Moose00 Oo.

If you like the sound of a semi going down the road, then take it out. :D

Cool, thanks.

Thanks guys! Looks like that silencer ring will be coming outta my truck tomorrow AM... :-laf And, afterwards, hopefully there won't be any delays on my ride to work up rt-495 so I can really hear the turbo climbing up some hills! :)

... So, besides the obvious noise increase, is there any value in removing the silencer ring? I could tell, but is the turbo performing better without ring? Is there an increase in HP, etc. ? I like the sound, but can anticipate hearing the complaints from passengers on long trips...

Other than a increase in sound when the turbo is turboing, say over 5 PSI, there is no change to the turbo's preformance in any way. Moose

Thanks, guys... . I'll see (hear) what it sounds like this weekend while hauling 3000lbs of building materials up to northern NH. . . If there's no gain otherwise, i'll probably put it back...
