UPDATE: Turned this into a poll. When you change your oil, do you do change your filter from above or below?

3000 miles and did the first oil change. I did all my own oil changes on my 96, 97 & 2004. 5 too.

In the past I've always just removed the tube from the airfilter box and the turbo and then removed the filter by hand using a terrycloth rag to get a good grip. I can control the mess easier and oil doesn't come down in my face.

When I went to drain the oil the drain plug was very loose. Took almost no effort to loosen. BUT when I went to remove the filter the factory had it on so tight that I HAD to come in from the bottom and use the appropriate filter removal tool. Even in doing this it took all my strength (I'm a big guy) to get this thing loose. Has anyone noticed them ultra tight from the factory?

I went with Rotella 15w-40 CI-4 Plus. Don't flame me but I had an old Fram 3976 (3796?) filter and used that too.

Anyway -- I went to Walmart and I saw they have CI-4 Plus rated Rotella 5w-40 Full Synthetic for $13. 95 per gallon. The dino Rotella 15w-40 was around $7. 50 per gallon. So the difference was $42 vs. $22. 50. I can afford that.

So the question is -- is it worth it on these engines to even bother with synthetic? Some say that oil changes are more important than what you use, assuming the viscosity (5w-40 or 15w-40) and the ratings (CI) are met. Are these engines so robust that the benefits of synthetics are wasted on them? In gasoline engines with all the aluminum, dissimilar metals and sensitivity to friction, synthetics are really a bonus. But with these engines assuming you do oil changes often are you really going to see much in the way of reduced wear or fuel economy?

What is the conventional wisdom with these engines on this issue... . ???

From the factory they are a bear to get off. Nothing strange there.

That said, GET THAT FRAM OUT NOW!

With the failures reported now, my fram filter bloated, you shouldn't take the chance.

If you decide to go syn it is generally recommended to wait until the motor is broken in 15-20k. I believe the Cummins to be good for 300k + on dino, so I would rather save the money figuring I will probably want to replace the truck before that kind of mileage.

Get the FRAM out of there or you could have some real problems.

On my 98 and 01 I always took the filter off from the top. I can do it with the 05 cause there is too much in the way so I go in from the bottom.

When I took my factory filter off, I had to use a 3 foot pull bar to break it loose. I kept waiting for the filter to twist but I was right at the top and she finally broke free.

2nd Oil change 10K Valvoline Prem. Blue w/ Fleetgard Stratopore oil filter from Geno's. Also changed the fuel filter with Fleetgard as well. I'm not sure if I'll ever go with Synth oil. Nothing against it, just have never used a full synth oil in ANY vehicle I've owned, just some blended stuff. But I must agree with the others... get that FRAM off there ASAP. I've had good Fram with gassers, but I ain't trusting my expensive engine to them. (1st diesal I've ever owned, but tearing down the engine is something I don't want to have to do anytime soon) But I also go for the filter from below, with a ziploc baggie around it to catch the oil... . too bag the one the wife let me have had a small hole in it :rolleyes: ... messiest oil change I've done in years. :{

You guys are over-reacting! :p

Even the FRAM website says they're great.

You all got me interested so I read the propaganda. They get over 90% of the dirt stuff when the industry average is 76%. What more could you ask for?

They even look great:

I'm going to leave it in there till I get to 6k miles just to show you how great an oil filter it is.

EVERYTHING above is sarcasm! I'm joking! Sheesh! I'll have it out of there by tomorrow night once I get a suitable replacement.

I did go do some research and found one website that said the mopar filters are made by FRAAAAAM if that makes any difference.

http://www.allpar.com/eek/oil.html :-laf

EEK A FRAM OIL FILTER!!!! Quick call the oil filter police and have this guy arrested for Cummins abuse!!! :--) :--) :--)

From below... nice thing about the 4x4 is I can slide a 5-gallon bucket under the truck to catch the oil.

Get the 4-2-1 filter kit form Genos Garage and save yourself some nice bucks - go with the good old dino Rotella and change it every 5K, do the fuel filter every other oil change, then the air filter every 4th oil change.

The Mopar filter is supposed to be a rebadged Fleetguard.

I just had a used oil sample tested with 8303 miles on the oil, 36299 miles on the truck, Chevron Delo 400, 15w-40, Fleetguard filter. Basically, the lab said the oil was fine. I live in the dusty, hot desert. Pull a 7000lb+ trailer, ocassionally, in the mountains.

The new Chevron Delo now has moly & boron included in the additive packages which makes it that much slipperier. It has been said that the differences in quality between the conventional oils and the synthetics is narrowing. There is a tremendous amount of information on a website entitled "bob is the oil guy.com". There are people there that are "wizards" when it comes to lubrication products.

I think your biggest advantage with synthetics is if you go with extended oil change intervals while using some form of bypass oil filteration. This would probably make a lot of sense if you are driving a lot of miles.

I just bought a case of Chevron Delo 400 15w-40 CI-4+ (6 gals. ) at Sam's Club for $38. 82. About two bucks cheaper than the Shell Rotella.

Also, remember that all synthetics are created equal. There are quite a few different "levels" of synthetic oils. Semi-synthetic, fully-synthetic, etc. There are also a number of smaller oil manufacturers creating very high quality oils that many of us have never heard of before. Schaeffer Oil Co. comes to mind, right now. There 9000 fully synthetic is supposed to be an excellent quality motor oil. I know that I had never heard of that oil or it's parent company til I read the "bob is the oil guy.com" website.

Hope this helps.

JGann where are you from? Orange is bad unless u r a UM fan. :) By the way Dino Rotella is $6 a gallon (case of 6) at Costco. Oh by the way I always go from the bottom-I have a lift in my garage.

Hey Bill! I'm in Delray Beach. I'm originally from Maryland so I'm a lifetime Terp fan. Sad that Miami and VA Tech are now in the ACC. Poor Maryland couldn't handle FSU -- now it's hopeless.

I just let my Costco membership expire. Far too many trips spending $150. 00 and not knowing what I bought for that or why I bought it. Was great fun but too expensive.

Now I just go to Walmart, pay a little more and have portion control. I only need one can of WD-40 at a time.

Lot of guys coming up from the bottom. Just started a poll with this one. Will be interesting. I'm still a topper man, myself.

I thought the question was top or bottom?

Back on topic, I change from the bottom. After I pull the drain, I tackle the filter. Slide out, put the old filter in the trash and fill the new filter. Slide back under and put the new filter on, put the drain back in and slide back out. Pop the hood and fill the crank case. Done deal!

BTW, since this turned into an oil/oil filter thread ( I know how some of you guys freak when the topic gets lost), I use the fleetgard/Valvoline combo. Valvoline does have the Cummins logo on it yanno!

Jeez. You're so precise, JHardwick. ;)

Seriously -- it is, you're right.

Actually, what happened was I got to free-flowing of ideas and never contemplated a poll. Then people started saying their preferences and I realized I'd started one after the fact. So I figured I'd just go with it and turn it into a poll.

But Synthetic benefit analysis is also welcome! :D

I had a gallon of Premium Blue in my hands today but decided to go with what I know. Rotella.

Maybe next time... .

That's good. It never entered my mind with the ;) that I put after the comment that you wouldn't know I was kidding. I guess sometimes things get lost in the translation on these boards. I should be more careful.

Actually, I'm one of the worst to be taken out of context ... ... ... ... ..... now, back to our regularly scheduled programming :-laf
