That's a good price for oil! I bought some not too long around and it was $13 a gallon for Rotella 15w-40 dino oil at Wal-Mart. At Napa is was $14 or $15.

They get over 90% of the dirt stuff when the industry average is 76%.

It's not the dirt they remove from the oil system, it's the filter media they ADD to the oil system that's the key! :-laf

wow, a lot of you guys like taking the filter out from the top. . that is more work though i think. for me, i'd have to take off my air filter and piping, then get to the filter. much easier with a filter socket and long extension to get to it from under the truck.

The Bottom.



I use the Delo 400 and switch to a less-viscous synthetic (after breaking in the engine) for winters here in Maine. I use Amsoil or Rotella synthetic. The lighter weight makes a big difference in how easily the engine cranks and how soon I get oil pressure. Back to dyno in the spring.

From the top. Got in the habit on my '98 and continued on the new one. I remove the ducting from the Airaid to the turbo and do an inspection at that time. Two hose clamps to remove is all it takes and its a much cleaner operation than from underneath. Combined with a Fumoto drain valve my oil changes are a breeze!

You forgot option #3. Cut a hole in the plastic inner fender and do it from the side. After trying to get that $#%#^# filter off the very first change, I got out the saw and hacked away. Cut a hole just big enough to get a hand and filter through. By far easier than bottom and as for the top---why???? I didn't have one of those fancy schmancy filter wrenches that I have since bought. Still like going at it from the side. At least WHEN I spill (as opposed to IF) it runs on the shop floor and not all over my arm like from the bottom. Can't get 'em off from the bottom for a while 'cause I just found a box of older filters in my garage. Kinda like finding a $20 bill in your coat pocket!!!

I should get two votes since I've done both. I came down from the top for my 98 and 02. From the bottom for my 04. Now it is back to the top for the 97, at least I think I will when the time comes.

When I compared it to the FRAAAAAM it was much better constructed. Then I researched it on the web and found out it was pretty darn good. Has some synthetic filter material and is made by the same folks who make the Mobil 1, Delco and STP oil filters -- Champion labs. See the Supertech info at the oil filter study.



It's not as cool looking as the FRAAAAAM with the orange and all..... The FRAAAAAAM had character. Like old shoes and an old recliner.

The problem with the Fram's has been the initial oil pressure from the startup of the Cummins. The high pressure pretty much disintegrated the filter causing it to plug the oil lines/galleys.



Plus, the filtering, as you discovered, was not as good as it could be.

I take mine off from the bottom with the filter wrench on a socket with extension. I just tried putting a large Zip-lock bag over the filter during removal for the first time last month, and that works really well.
