 Any of you fellows have any ideas as to what might have happened to a 98. 5 24 valve with a just installed comp box? truck ran about two hours and then DIED in the middle of the raod. Checked the usual stuff and can get no fuel out of the injector line at the head. Had a new MAP sensor , so I changed it , didnt help. Also the night before a new hybrid turbo was installed 35-40. Need some help. what would the code be for a failed inj. pump/ thanx in advance

I assume "the usuall stuff", means the lift-pump has been checked? If it has been, it sounds like a bad VP, here are some of the injection pump codes... ...

P0181

Fuel Injection Pump Failure

P0215

Fuel Injection Pump Control Circuit

P0216

Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure

Good luck, Rob

Injection pump is toast, it happens and is scarily common on the 98. 5's and 99's. Pump wire taps... ... ... .....

My money is with the analogy of the two respondants.

However, I would like to point out that IF you have run the VP44 from a '98. 5/'99 24v for lets say, 50k mi. , added a "major" fueling box (pump wire tap) and subsequently run it another 10k+ mi. without incident, it's a pretty good bet that it will last every bit as long as any of the later versions of the VP44.

The VP44s most likely to die an early death have a serial number ending in 11 (snake eyes!)... usually found on '99s.

I have 81. 5k mi. on my OE '98. 5 VP44 with an Edge Comp for at least 20k mi. with absolutely no problems... so far [gulp].

LOL

I've had several I've worked on with your symptoms. Got good pressure out of lift pump, fuel to and out of the vp-44, but none to the injectors. you don't have to have any faults with these symptoms 5 out of the 8 I've done that had a comp on with these symptoms didn't log faults, the internals just went kaput. It wasn't sending any pressure to injectors. try putting some transmission fluid or two stroke oil in fuel and see if that'll work , if not no other choice but get another pump.

I'm with John, I have a 99 that has had injectors and a power edge box for 120,000 miles and have had no pump problems yet. (knock on wood);)

there was a really good post here about 2 years ago explaining what happened. Something about the early pumps and putting a "wire tap" box on them. If they ran a couple thousand after the box was installed, you got a good pump. If not, you had one with burrs on it or something. I think the rotor inside the pump hits on something which rips it off the shaft.
